    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Suzhou Foreign Language School full-time

    Pros

A flexible work environment. The compensation is competitive and always on time. I can't speak for other departments, but my department is managed VERY well. AWESOME students!! The school is always kept very clean and tidy. HR seems to be putting in a lot of effort to improve the school. Their efforts sometimes fall short, but at least they are trying.

    Cons

All foreign teachers are kind of thrown in the same basket. Whether you work 50 hour weeks or the bare minimum, everyone gets treated the same. The difference in pay between primary school and middle school/high school does not always reflect the difference in workloads. Focus seems to be on paying whoever has a masters degree...not necessarily on who works the hardest or who has the most USEFUL qualifications (IE: having completed several TESOL programs). There isn't really any room for advancement for Foreign Staff.

    Advice to Management

Don't look at your foreign teachers as a collective group. Look at us as individuals. Some of us work very hard, others do not. I should not be thrown in with the teachers who do the bare minimum.

    Pros

SFLS was a great place to work. Easy hours. Very friendly environment to foreigners. Always paid on time. Colleagues are so chill, everyone meshed real well. I didn't think I'd be able to find green so easily in China, so being able to smoke with so many coworkers was chill. School is close to an underground. Three meals a day included. Students are super smart and motivated.

    Cons

The school is near the end of Line 1. Its hard to eat the cafeteria food every day. A few of the staff can be quite sexist, but I hear that's everywhere.

    Advice to Management

Just keep doing what you're doing. SFLS is the best (non-international) school in Suzhou. It would have been nice to get paid more than 10k though - raising the salaries might boost morale and lower the turnover.

  3. "One of the best schools for foreign teachers to work!"

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Suzhou Foreign Language School as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good working environment, understanding and supportive management, beautiful city and an amazing group of colleagues both foreign and Chinese.

    Cons

It's a private Chinese school with an International dept.

    Advice to Management

There is scope of improvement in management. The intake of students in the international dept should be on credit basis.

  4. "Growing school, cramped quarters"

    Pros

Salary and benefits package are great, teaching materials are above par, most fellow teachers are easy to get along with, good location vs my living quarters

    Cons

Too many teacher hires of those with no teaching background, campus student body staff is growing but facilities are not. Senior management is distant and doesn't seem truly invested in staff or its students. Students seem to run the show in many cases.

    Advice to Management

Kids need discipline and structure. Rewarding lazy students equally as achieving students is ridiculous. Having no punishment system at all is a detriment to teachers and the "play-by-the-rules" top students. With the extremely high student count, perhaps it's time to build a new school or add on to the current campus somehow (build up?).

  5. "A good school with a growing reputation."

    Pros

The staff is helpful and friendly to those who are willing to work. The school is growing and changing rapidly and trying to model itself after a western education system. This school is not a good place for foreigners who want to have easy money and a lot of personal play time. This is a real school.

    Cons

Management can often be distant or missing. Language barrier can cause difficulty occasionally. This is a school that is typical of those in China: red tape and sudden schedule change are a constant hassle.

    Advice to Management

Don't put so much attention on one program. Other students in each group are valuable resources that should be seen as potential successes rather than profits.
