I have been working at Swarthmore College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive salaries, extremely generous benefits, and a campus culture that is strongly committed to diversity and inclusion. Strong cultural values.

    Cons

Not many really. Things move slowly because the college is committed to the practice of concise building, meaning many, many stakeholders from all different levels will be asked to weigh in on decisions. If you're coming from the for-profit world you may struggle with this.

    Pros

    Two breaks per day
    pretty easy schedule
    Benefits
    Life insurance

    Cons

    Lazy management
    Condescending
    Resistant to change
    Dishonest management
    Rude

    Advice to Management

Do not go out of your way to make people totally miserable for no reason during the 90 day probationary period. And as an hourly employee on an academic schedule, I find it crazy that they tell everyone you cannot get unemployment during these long periods without work, when in fact you fully can, or they'll offer a couple days of work for three months so that technically work was offered to you.
Literally never been flat out told to my face that I was replaceable and unneeded.

I worked at Swarthmore College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - workload is pretty light
    - work's enjoyable--it's fun to teach younger students, and you cement your own knowledge of the material

    Cons

    - the pay is decent for students, but you can make more doing part time work NOT directly for the school
    - job is over at the end of the semester

    Advice to Management

A little more guidance would be nice at times. Ex, a copy of the textbook, access to the problem sets before TA sessions, etc.

I worked at Swarthmore College full-time

    Pros

Excellent educational institution, top students, strong focus on social responsibility. The relatively small size of staff and faculty allows for people to get to know each other. The college offers many opportunities for professional development.

    Cons

New president (1 year) is very strong, but there has been lots of turnover in that position in the last few years, which the staff has had to adjust to.

    Advice to Management

Maintaining a sense of community and shared sense of mission among staff is important. At a college where students are of greatest importance, it is easy to lost sight of the importance of staff.
