I have been working at Swedish Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Hardcore dedicated leaders who care about the quality of care and improvement of life for patients, employees, and guests. I have been in the HCA system for 6 years and at Swedish for 2, but it's clear to me where the hardworking team players go. It is an honor to work here and be a part of in credible team to truly does care. I have seen some incredible challenges overcome by this team. I would gladly bring my family...

    Cons

It's not easy to work this hard and make sacrifices sometimes for others. But is pays off when your part of a team who all do the same to accomplish such great achievements.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work! It shows how much you care.

I have been working at Swedish Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, stock options, and 401k matching. There are some long term employees in the lab with a lot of valuable experience and knowledge. Phlebotomy supplies are well stocked. Employees are welcome to share their thoughts during meetings and on surveys. Management tries to fix issues that they can (their hands are tied though). Tyler H (corporate) has pushed for real changes to help us.

    Cons

The productivity standards (which the lab doesn't control) are unrealistic and often dangerous. We're told the lab is "fully staffed" but routinely only have two phlebotomists/lab assistants per shift on evenings and nights. This is half of what is truly needed (they have other duties on top of drawing!) and causes the nurses and doctors to become angry with the lab, which increases already sky high stress levels....

    Advice to Management

Understand the importance of the lab in patient care. We are the phlebotomists drawing good patient samples to eliminate preanalytical errors. We are the technologists and scientists who run and interpret complex tests (none of us has a license in 'button-pushing'). Our results are almost always necessary for caregivers to diagnose and treat patients. There is a shortage in this field and you are losing good employees...

I have been working at Swedish Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Always quite busy, shift goes fast. The transition to being managed by Quest Laboratory is seemingly accomplished after several years.. Long term laboratory employees really help stabilize the team with expertise and now have wildly fluctuating start times to compensate for reduced staff/increased workload at all benches; a situation that corporate number crunching has produced. Butterfly usage is not limited. HCA...

    Cons

Meditech is wasteful of our time. Time where every move is being monitored, productivity demands are unrealistic, ever-increasing, and ever stressful to many. Staffing is ridiculously low...and you are making huge profits on the backs of your people. Literally. Phlebs are being worked to death, several are out with serious medical issues and you provide NO real solutions. Turnover at all time high, with management...

    Advice to Management

Remember what it's like to be in the trenches, on the benches!! Have some backbone when it comes to staffing needs for your people. Show us with your patterns of behavior that you understand our concerns and needs and will actively advocate for Real solutions. Hang out on the bench sometime if you forgot what it's like...and...workload is even heavier than what it used to be....day after day...with little hope of change...

I worked at Swedish Medical Center full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There are some good people working there, coffee shop nice on ground floor open on nights. There are parking garage that’s free. There is 20 word minimum.

    Cons

It is not a good place to start as a new grad. They expect new grads to be able to take 4 patients first day. There is five weeks of orientation, and if you ask question it will count against you. The nurses are very catty and back stabbing, this place is an example of how nurses eat there young. Dangerous staffing ratio 1:8 and not enough techs to help out 1:20. Patient are charged everything down to the toothpaste....

    Pros

Great people to work with, and exceptional care.

    Cons

Hard work. HCA run hospital which means you get the most cost effective means to work with. Sometimes meaning not enough staff.

I have been working at Swedish Medical Center full-time for less than a year

    Pros

very easy to get hired! The staff is nice and for the most part hard working. Doctors are super nice.

    Cons

All hca cares about is making money! They force us to budge everyday and work short staff to save money. 2 weeks after I got off orientation they had me charge on night shift when I had zero charge exp and when I brought my concerns to management they did not care until I threaten to go to HR and quit. You are micromanaged and threaten to be wrote up for everything down to not...

I have been working at Swedish Medical Center for more than 10 years

    Pros

As a nurse working there for 15 years I have a immense appreciation for the great experience the seasoned staff brings to the table. Swedish has a solid reputation in the community , in no small part due due the experienced and caring staff.

    Cons

Management has increased in size with more and more middle and lower management levels added almost monthly! HCA is not holding back any funds in that regard and the rest of the staff is suffering for it. Result: lots of little egos running around trying to make themselves pertinent. Swedish has never been at the top level,as far as pay is concerned and now is losing the edge...

    Advice to Management

Don't think you care but here it is: get rid of the toxic work environment created by too many little chiefs. It does not foster access to senior level ,( maybe by design?), it does however intentionally create fear and harassment and even though you have denied it , a tremendous loss of solid hardworking well proven work force. How can that be fiscally beneficial ? Every year when the employee satisfaction scores come...

I have been working at Swedish Medical Center full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Certainly the staff of SMC made it a good place to work. I was continually impressed by the hardworking and committed staff - especially the tenured individuals that had been through a lot. While I was there, they had an amazing concierge service for staff to utilize. Great cafeteria that made not bringing breakfast or lunch way too easy. SMC also had some neat cultural experiences unique to the hospital itself, as...

    Cons

SMC is part of the larger HCA conglomerate and they are driven strictly by profits. Benefits continued to be reduced for staff and pay seemed to stagnate except when faced with a staffing crisis in certain departments. A job in management or any salaried employee guaranteed especially long hours and extremely high expectations with little regard to work life balance. The PTO...

I have been working at Swedish Medical Center full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

I like that it's a fast pace environtment, and I like my schedule of 3 12 hour shifts

    Cons

The pay with HCA is not very competative and the mangagment is HORRIBLE!

    Advice to Management

Stop treating your employees so poorly. Believe it or not, you are not running a comunitst country, you are managers of an admissions team.
