I worked at Swindon Borough Council full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible working adding to a great work/life balance, you can work here and raise a family/spend more time out of the office very comfortably. (Department/service dependent - not all teams embrace the "culture").

There are some truly great people who care greatly about their jobs and making a change in their roles making it a mainly pleasant working environment (again, dependent on location and service area).

If you like life in the slow lane this would probably be the employer for you.

    Cons

Senior management are mainly disinterested in the progression and development of staff. Numerous new values and visions are released but are not seen through practically.

A lot of people get away with doing the bare minimum having been there for years at a time and having watch their salary increments increase and have reached the top of the grade therefore have spent the last 10 years sitting back. With a complete disinterest in change, efficiency and general hard work it deeply affects the culture.

Lack of accountability for senior management and directors.

No career development or progression despite hard work/best efforts (service/department dependent).

No investment in high level training - funding professional qualifications etc.

    No performance related pay.

No incentives to work harder or smarter.

    Advice to Management

Massive work needs to be done to reshape the organisational culture through a series of backed schemes related to training, pay, accountability, performance incentives, this needs to be implemented by senior managers through action and not be implemented by an external consultant.

Management needs to sing from the same hymn sheet to become a professional, smarter and unified authority. There are huge disparities between managers, heads and service areas - don't be afraid to challenge and hold senior management accountable, expect and encourage better!

I worked at Swindon Borough Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Met some nice people, work was OK, location Ok. Not much else to say really as there weren't many positives.

    Cons

Not enough to do, no sense of urgency, some people have been there too long and are reluctant to change and recognise that there are customers that need to be served - no purpose or drive. Had hoped my expectations about working in local government would be wrong but they weren't.

    Advice to Management

Change. Invest. Set clear expectations and hold people to account. Remove the blockages.

I have been working at Swindon Borough Council full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

close-knit collective and everyone is really friendly. Everyone tries their best and cares about their work.

    Cons

Budgetary issues impact on our performance. Not enough resources and people end up doing a lot of unpaid overtime ... which in the long term makes them not like the workplace anymore and leave.

    Advice to Management

accept responsibility when something goes wrong, there is a blaming culture that needs to stop.

    Pros

Great working atmosphere and great working relationships, fair employer, pressured at times, but not overly so. Good hours. Lots of flexibility

    Cons

Some of the employees who have been there for years, no longer bother to do their jobs properly they are basically waiting to leave and collect their pension. It can be bit frustrating when you are working hard, and see others barely lift a finger all day and still get paid.

    Advice to Management

Have company reviews with older serving staff, to help set them goals to still feel inspired. There has been a lot of changes to SBC with the income of external help companies and some of the older serving staff, need support to know whats expected of them or give them new and varied duties.

I worked at Swindon Borough Council (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Working for the town assisting the council to meet plans, working for & with local communities, and working with most staff who many of extremely hard working.

    Cons

Face fit, can be unprofessional in some if the things that take place & unfair. Redundancies then the next minute they hire for the same roles, if only tax payers new😡

    Advice to Management

Lots of time, energy & money spent on engagement, to no avail. Mgt still only listen & act on what they want to. Still many managed in the wrong roles.
