I worked at Sybase full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

None nothing positive with this office. Worst career choice all time

    Cons

Terrible management led by Terry Gellerman. Phony job posting... Sybase company itself is fine but the chicago office is led by poor management, not following company's policy, no training and no career support. There are no diversity in the office and the office is poorly equipped.

    Advice to Management

get rid of the people in the chicago office

    Pros

    Some interesting projects
    Some good people

    Cons

    Employees taken for granted
Expensive health plans, no stock options, vacation too short.
Bonus plans ridiculously low for rank and file. High for executives.
No working from home - particularly ridiculous since many projects are done by people from many different locations.
Best employees are just "stuck" (H1, etc)
People work way too hard for their compensation levels
    Way too many meetings.
    Incompetent management
    Promotions almost non-existent
Fear based culture - Dictator CEO surrounded by "yes" men rather than competent/passionate leadership

    Advice to Management

    Replace top leadership
Start treating people as assets - give options
    Promote creativity

    Pros

Dublin HQ is very nice. Benefits are great, but very expensive. Company has been very successful in recent past with record financial results.

    Cons

The culture is very fear based and a level of paranoia I have never seen exists within the company.

CEO is involved in every decision, no matter how small Thus, employees have no ability to influence the success of the company, which makes it difficult to find meaning in your work. Compensation is well below average for the industry, and sales people are especially poorly compensated as compared to industry.

Senior Management is composed of friends and family of CEO, and thus not necessarily the best and the brightest. Old Boy's network is alive and well here. Senior Management ensures that the good old boys are taken care of financially, and the rank and file receive paltry bonuses and no salary increases. Layoffs happened regularly and salaries were frozen for >2 years despite record quarters.

Lots of employees have long tenure here, which would make one think that it's a great place to work. In reality, the long tenures exist because few other opportunities exist in the area, and many employees live in the Central Valley and cannot commute to the Valley.

Do not take a job at this company unless you are starving.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the people who have made you succesful, and loosen up the reins on small decisions

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    good commute
    nice clean building
    onsite child care
    onsite cafeteria and gym
some of the people are great to work with

    Cons

command and control management style, often employing fear and intimidation to control employees
they hire cousins, friends, daughter's godmother, etc. so loyalty is valued much more than competence
toxic environment for people who have innovative ideas

    Advice to Management

CEO needs to first replace the VP of HR, and then surround himself with people who are not yes men. There is a reason why the new blood you are hiring into the company turns around and promptly leaves. If you put good people into a bad culture, the culture will win every time, unfortunately. Never gonna make it to 2 billion that way.

There are a lot chances for people needs more challenges, always a lot work to do.

    Advice to Management

respect all employees as normal human being, not robots

I worked at Sybase (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    full network access
    food facility/travel facility
can opt out for work from home option occasionally.

    Cons

no projects..as soon as SAP has taken over this company sybase..not able to handle esteemed clients..lost client like ANZ bank.
unequal opportunities over gender and social status.
no workplace ethics and healthy competition.
managers are just pampering the male employees sitting near to them..often get involved too.
old and arrogant male employees not flexible to adjust with new employees coming in office..they usually leave in 2-3 weeks.
managers and HR ignored the complaints made by me over the bully and abusive behavior by male employees. they just advice you to adjust.
HR are so arrogant to accept their mistakes and shortcomings.
overall very negative environment for a job .

    Advice to Management

please be aware what you are doing there along with your behavior, don't go carried away with people who just butter you for their benefits.

    Pros

car allowance was a good one. Other pro was the technology. Car park, shops nearby , quiet place, nice trees in the carpark, and friendly birds. The facilities guys were also nice.

    Cons

awful command and control management. Managers coming from Sybase seem to be completely uneducated and ignorant. The director running the place acted with unjustified arrogance most of the time. Just full of himself for no reason.

    Advice to Management

replace all Sybase managers with new modern and educated ones. It is the 21st century after all. It is amazing to see such bad management

    Pros

    Good Medical benefits.
There were some nice people working there, but that was about it.

    Cons

Too many jobs being sent to offshore. Horrible Indian bosses. Communication issues. jobs need to stay in the US!! Management was cheap, so cheap it cut into productivity.

    Advice to Management

    – Get rid of the offshore!! Stop sending jobs to India, people in the US need jobs to stimulate our economy and you can hire 1 American for the cost of 3 or 4 Indians who will do a better job!!
