    Pros

    - Great location if you live in Tri-Valley
    - On-site gym
    - Some chances to work on newer technology (mobile, Eclipse plugins)
    - Health insurance can be VERY comprehensive for not a lot of cash out-of-pocket. Really cheap drug co-pays.
    - Lots of good people, who know what they are doing and are good engineers. Everyone I've worked with is good natured and helpful.

    Cons

    Day to day
    ---------------
Unbelievably bureaucratic development process. There's a ton of overhead involved in just being able to check out and change one file. Managers must approve code checkins. Code reviews are done, but good luck getting your system set up to take part. Many internal tools were developed in-house, and it shows. Quality seems to be hit or miss, and is quite frankly, understaffed.

Much work is done overseas, so if there's a problem blocking you, you're pretty much stuck until the next day.

    Strategy
    -----------
Lots of disarray when it comes to product strategy. Who is doing what? What are we doing? It seems to change every couple of months. There's a fine line between reacting to what customers/markets want and not sticking to a strategy long enough to see what works. There's also a sad lack of understanding of the target developers.

    Management
    ------------------
While I may be reporting an isolated case, there's lots of micro-management of day-to-day tasks. There are good managers here, but it's very uneven.

    Advice to Management

Bring the jobs back to the US and you'll see a big increase in morale and quality. Take a hard look at your processes and ask if they make sense anymore or could be done more efficiently.

    Pros

Coworkers are are nice and helpful.
Dublin location is very good with an easy commute and lots of on-site facilities (gym, child care, caffeteria)
Some of the work is challenging.

    Cons

    Fear based management culture.
No business vision from the line managers.
Executive leadership only cares about short term profits or cost cutting in that order.
    No training.
Cheap culture so the infrastructure is generally not best of breed but rather the cheapest solution.
No pay raises while company made record profits!

    Advice to Management

Spend some money to make money.
Treat your employees as assets rather than expendable commodities.
    Thin out the management structure.

    Pros

Sybase is a company that values and respects its engineers. The work environment is pleasant and the benefits good.

    Cons

Almost nobody is passionate about their work. The flagship product is in maintenance mode. The parking lot is empty by 6pm.

    Advice to Management

    Don't make engineers into managers.

    Pros

Good pay and some nice people that work there. Even some folks in middle-management are nice, but if pressed I think they'd admit that you have to attain a certain level of numbness in order to stay sane working there.

    Cons

Corporate direction is very engineering based and out of touch with what the customers want or need. I've been there for 7 years with no promotions or raises aside from cost of living increases and no feedback on what it will take for a promotion. All this while getting positive focal reviews and significant accomplishments.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to customers, stop letting engineering set the direction of the company, let product management determine product requirements, listen to expert advice from employees that work for you.

I worked at Sybase full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The salaries at Sybase are fair, there are opportunities to advance, and there were opportunities to work on leading-edge technologies. If you worked in a remote office (from the Dublin headquarters), there was a good chance the work culture to be much better.

    Cons

Sybase has a poor work-life balance. Many managers expect you to work very long hours, and working those long hours is what they valued most. It didn't matter how well you did your job or whether you got your job done, if you worked long hours and were a "yes man", then that endeared you to many. Vacation was a max of 3 weeks per year regardless how many years of service, which is unheard of in the high-tech software business.

    Advice to Management

Value quality over quantity. Value healthy debate and coming to the best solution/decision over simply agreeing with you manager to avoid conflict. Don't promote a culture of "you should just be happy to have a job".

    Pros

If you are looking for a stable paycheck and low pressure environment this is the place for you.

    Cons

Must be good at playing politics to advance. Doesn't foster innovation or leadership. Sybase name not a strong resume booster. Dublin is far from SF or Silicon Valley hot spots.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look why Oracle and Sybase have done so differently in the market. I think the answer lies in difference between corporate culture and people.

I have been working at Sybase full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent opportunities to learn and work on cutting edge technologies. Very often you have some of the best people in the industry to work alongwith.

    Cons

Unhealthy work life balance. Very often employees have to at odd hours to finish the assigned work. HR benifits are also not the best of the breed.

    Advice to Management

Management needs a better approach to improve work life balance of employees. They also need to consider future growth opportunites which have to be improved.
