I worked at Sybase full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good overall benefits and decent salary, friendly co-workers, gourmet coffee, game room...etc

    Cons

Ever since Sybase got acquired by SAP, company morale has gone down, as Sybase management was pressured by SAP to cut head counts, make stupid changes to the work space (so they can catch up with the trend? Give me a break), replace existing software systems with their own dumb systems. At lease one manager started using fear tactics to micro-manage employees. He would time how long you were away from your desk, observe how you would sit or speak in meetings, and pick on little things that weren't issues before,

They also tried to adopt the so-called agile methodology for everything, not realizing that it just won't work on every single project. A couple of long-time employees who were selected to be the SCRUM Master also started to think they were now the "managers" (just the opposite, a SCRUM Master is NOT a manager) and started to boss people around. Since then people started to leave the company.

    Advice to Management

You are not the only employer in town.

I have been working at Sybase full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good work culture.
    Not much stress.
Some of the teams do good work.
Good for people who want to have personal/family time in life.

    Cons

There are some teams which have terrible politics. Some other teams hire incompetent rowdies as contractors and they ruin the work culture on the floor. Nepotism is rampant. Some of the senior management has moved out in recent times. I see that the ship has lost steam.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the vertical gap between higher management and employees. Get rid of hush-hush culture and bring in openness.

  3. "Runner-up database company swallowed up by SAP"

    StarStarStarStarStar

    I worked at Sybase full-time

    Pros

Everything reasonable rather than made-blowing: reasonable products, reasonable management, reasonable conditions. For some time the products were technically superior to the more successful Oracle.

    Cons

As a database company it was always the poor runner-up to Oracle. Tended to permeate the culture, where everyone was *striving to be second".

    Advice to Management

Recognise that the UK (market, industry, customer base, workforce) is different to the USA. Try to preserve an identity post absorption within SAP.

    I worked at Sybase full-time

    Pros

They have a good core product and good core developers. The income stream from Wall Street is steady although not growing.

    Cons

The sales staff is a bit annoying, a bit desperate, not technologically informed, and too eager to make promises that technical people can't fulfill.

    Advice to Management

Do a deal that radically increases market share: maybe create a compatibility layer for MSSQL on the Linux platform.
