I worked at Sybase (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was a mid size company that challenged employees to continue to develop and perform at their best. They have an onsite Gym, Café & day care. Employees were able to have a challenging career and a balanced life.

    Cons

This company was a top down management company, that did not really empower their managers. However, that worked for it to be profitable and be acquired by SAP. However, since the acquisition, it is a struggle for Sybase employees to continue to perform at their levels as all decisions are made in Germany.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the people, walk the talk.

    Pros

There were days when the company was not acquired, those used to be golden days.
Each team was considered equally important. The focus was merely in achieving best product quality

    Cons

Senior management does not consider all teams as equal. There is a heavy bias on core team/product at the expense of overlooking activities by non-core team.

    Advice to Management

Engineers consider work as worship no work is good or bad to them, same feeling should be honored by the management, they should treat all teams/groups with equal respect.

I have been working at Sybase full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company had very good benefits compared to many other companies and a big draw to working for the company was the people you worked with but after the company was purchased by SAP the vibe changed to a very distance organization with less collaboration.

    Cons

The Senior Management was primarily a very close circle of executives with prior history with the rest of the senior management conforming to the core group's values so integrity with respect to managing people fairly was questionable in some circumstances. Personnel and compensation decisions were controlled by the senior management staff with little knowledge of the actual situation at the lower levels. The vacation benefits were below industry norm

    Advice to Management

The company should not have voluntarily sold out to SAP which may have not been possible since the company was public and SAP could have completed a hostile takeover.
