I worked at Sydney Water full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    9 Day fortnight
    Work/life balance
    Easy to take time off
If you have a good manger they can mentor and develop you to where you want to be

    Cons

If you are in team where you have bad manager it is hard to progress and grow.

Any family or husband and wives working at the company need to be in completely different divisions to get rid of negative conflict of interest tactics.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the staff that have the old/public sector mentality and be harsher on under-performers

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A terrific place to work, with open, friendly colleagues and positive business partnering within Service Delivery.

    Cons

Career progession is a little slow. Instances of Old Boys club mentality.

    Advice to Management

Career planning and perfornance based salaries would be a great next step.

    Pros

Purpose, opportunity for development and work-life balance. Locally valued by the community and leading organisation in its field nationally and internationally.

    Cons

Lots of exciting change afoot, the pace of it will be difficult. Some areas of the business are cynical and will be hard to bring along at the pace required of them.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening and visit the whole business.

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is relatively good especially considering the hours and calibre of people getting paid these salaries.

    Cons

Poor re-employability from experience "gained" here unless you're already a seasoned window dresser.
"Commercial" managers are incompetent but talk a good game.
Finance is a toothless tiger. Reality is the Board dictates what will and won't be done or spent.

    Advice to Management

You are all on the gravy train getting serious dollars for all talk and no REAL action.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time

    Pros

Great work life balance, above market salary, great Managing Director, commitment to staff well being, family friendly, not a cut-throat place to work

    Cons

No financial rewards for performance - top performers rewarded identically to under performers, currently in transition - lack of direction

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to do too much. Stop spending money on consultants - change is not Powerpoint slides - deal with disfunctional teams

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance and remuneration

    Cons

Forget career progression unless you're a sycophant and talk big with buzz words.

    Advice to Management

Leadership in "Commercial" management is exceptionally poor at all levels. All talk, smoke and mirrors. Overpaid, especially management.

    Pros

Great work life balance with truly flexible hours and true devotion to employee well being

    Cons

None really. Anything listed here as a con would be purely nitpicking.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Yes, there is lots of restructuring and change. The big upside of this is the opportunity to participate and perhaps actually drive new ways of doing things from the ground up.
Sydney Water is one of the organisations leading the way in helping Sydney become a sustainable community.
Most people would be surprised at the level of hard core science happening here. We are testing drones, winning awards for predictive analytics, implementing new technologies and new ways of learning new skills.
I know some roles it is hard, but most people have full access to flexible work practices.
The stereotype many people have about a public service organisation doesn't apply here. Sydney Water is transforming into a commercially astute, costumer focused, fast paced organisation.

    Cons

Parramatta head office location may put some people off.
    Some silo thinking happening.

    Advice to Management

Think like a high performing team, not as high performing individuals.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of benefits of working at Sydney Water. Lots of change to get involved in and experience new experiences. Love working there.

    Cons

To many changes in the management structure. And though we are going through a lot of change, constant restructuring has hampered the moral levels of the staff.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, provide promotional opportunities, communicate better and find a better way to restructure. The constant restructuring is hurting the organisation.
