I worked at Sydney Water full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    9 Day fortnight
    Work/life balance
    Easy to take time off
If you have a good manger they can mentor and develop you to where you want to be

    Cons

If you are in team where you have bad manager it is hard to progress and grow.

Any family or husband and wives working at the company need to be in completely different divisions to get rid of negative conflict of interest tactics.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the staff that have the old/public sector mentality and be harsher on under-performers

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay reasonable, good opportunities if at the right place at the right time. Good people in those areas not wrecked by reform fatigue.

    Cons

Company is led by the nose by consultants producing poor outcomes. Poor, confused management. Ingenuous culture inhibits performance of those who are really keeping the show on the road

    Advice to Management

Get back to core functions. This is a simple business that is being ruined by over complication. Consultants and their latest meaningless fashions have too much influence.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Sydney Water full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good working conditions. Lots of opportunities for training. Committed and talented people to work with.

    Cons

10k staff 10 years ago. 4k 5 years ago. 2k today. Getting ready to cut itself in half again. Driven by govt shareholders and regulator to keep outsourcing. Success is measured in fewer FTEs not customer outcomes, revenue or cost. Fewer and fewer movement opportunities. Three strategies in three years as leaders struggle to set a direction and get ready for open competition. A feeding frenzy for big consulting firms while internals are ignored. Structure change is constant but systems are unchanged.

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending to be a multinational professional services firm and get back to being Sydney's water utility. Stop relying on consultants to do the thinking. Start being honest with your people about the medium to long term future of the organisation. Where you say you are going is not where you are heading.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work-life balance - can get a 9 day fortnight
Pay - some areas are overpaid
Growth - there is a lot of opportunity to move around, especially laterally. This is fantastic if you are looking to broaden your skill set/resume or make a career change.

    Cons

Slow moving & Bureaucratic - lots of approval requirements due to conservative and ex-government nature
Unequal benefits and opportunities - if you progress, get perks, how you are scored, if your projects succeed is often determined by who is in your network and what your background is rather than your performance.
Location - based in parramatta. It is ok, there are food options and gyms around but it takes a long time to get to via public transport and there is no free parking.

I have been working at Sydney Water full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good Work Life Balance
    Fortnightly RDO's
    Very good helpful workforce
Fairly flexible on start and end working hours in most areas of the business
    Can take long holidays

    Cons

    Travel to Parramatta
People management needs improvement across divisions
Senior managers do not role model as good leaders
Their is a culture of bullying and a huge issue of trust

    Advice to Management

Management do not communicate well, they are not transparent and do not role model key behaviours. There is alot of favouritism, performance management is poor and subjective. Leadership is poor and not respected. There is no follow through with development opportunties and key learnings

  8. "Great Manager and very nice peer team to work with."

    Pros

The management team at SWC whilst having a long time at the company were very knowledgeable about most company matters and helped me to fit straight in. Very friendly team to work with and many would go the extra mile to help you out.

    Cons

Location, Location! and a unecessary focus on outsourcing (in my opinion)

    Advice to Management

Reorganise, and keep the existing interlectural property where sensible to do so. Remain as friendly and helpful as you are.
