    Does not pay well!

Nov 6, 2022 - Math Tutor in Modesto, CA

    Pros

If you have a main job and are looking for some extra pay on the side, this might be a good option for you.

    Cons

Many tutoring sessions will take place at private residences, which requires you to drive there. You are not compensated for gas. When you get to a student's house, they may have forgotten about tutoring, in which case you will not get paid at all for that session. The hours are extremely limited which makes the cost of driving impact the job much more than normal, and the pay is abysmal considering the requirements to be employed there. Finally, the method they use to teach students does not actually target the areas that the students need help in, so it's not particularly effective.

    Solid Part-Time Resume Builder

    Apr 14, 2022 - Teacher/Tutor in Findlay, OH

    Pros

    - Minimal planning necessary for each student - Awesome personal connections with regular students - Management in location in Northeast Ohio was very accommodating - Fair compensation for work (I earned $13.75 an hour) - Most problems I had were with the style of group tutoring and effectiveness on students. Selfishly, the job is quite simple and kind if you do not give the students' goals a second thought (not my experience lol)

    Cons

    - Not sustainable as sole income - Occasionally, there are some extremely high expectations placed on student progress even when we only see them once a week for 2 hours. - Sometimes feels like daycare more than focused tutor work (expect a WIDE variety of skill levels) - Will be assigned students of skill levels/topics outside of comfort zone (You are mostly teaching math and reading. I do not teach these subjects, and was placed teaching things I was never VERY effective trained to teach, especially to struggling students, and that was tough) - teaching 2-4 students at a time can be more taxing than expected. Many students who need a LOT of help can be placed at tables together or with other moderately needy students who end up getting no help at all. You will become VERY good at multitasking. - Sometimes it felt like this style of tutoring/teaching only really worked for moderately needy students. It is a disservice to place a Junior who needs some Trigonometry help at a table with two 2nd graders who cannot read their "independent" work (a common issue)

    Got lucky!

    Oct 3, 2022 - SAT/ACT Math Tutor

    Pros

Don't know how other centers are, the one I am in (Hamilton) happens to have the most amazing people and management there. Would go out of their way to help with anything even personal. Crew is amazing, good students, great place. You won't get rich but for extra income it's perfect, no stress job.

    Cons

Pay is not great, but still way higher than most places. (more than $17 an hour for similar jobs). Hours can get low at off-season times.

    Good job, less pay

    Sep 1, 2022 - Reading Tutor
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

I like that we can focus on targeting skills the kids need to work on and seeing the growth and progress throughout the week. The student teacher ratio is manageable (3:1). The people are cool to work with. I like how we don’t have to deal with lesson plans and talking with parents.

    Cons

One big con is the pay. It is not enough especially with the inflation going on. Wish there were more resources and materials for the teachers to use with the kids. You have to be flexible when someone calls out and you have to take in another kid.
