I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Varied experience. Many wonderful years with great managers. Interesting work to do. Felt I did grow substantially.

    Cons

Many, many reorganizations leading to period of stagnation. Sometimes hard to accomplish anything of substantial size. Limited budgets for education, travel, and external consultants/contractors. Lean is an understatement.

    Advice to Management

Stop reorganizing. Focus on building the best, world-class security software and services.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

When John Thompson was CEO, Symantec ranked as one of the best places to work in Silicon Valley. He was a great leader and inspired many. Under John, the culture was everyone working together for what was best for the company. Departments cooperated, it was crazy busy in a good way, and people loved it.

    Cons

If you follow the news, you'll know that there has been tremendous turnover at the CEO level the past 5 years. What starts at the top rolls downhill and the culture has evolved to one of fear. They have solid products that I still use. I hope they can be great again for their employees.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

very smart people in R&D, finance and exec level.

    Cons

Feel bureaucratic mess sometimes, lot of redundant roles.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully the publically announced synergies for Blue Coat acquisition and similarly for Life Lock acquisition will take care of most of redundancy spread across Symantec. Greg & co have lots of very successful experience in running an extremely lean and productive organization Blue Coat and still produced growth. That's a rare combination and requires best in the class expertise in domain knowledge, market conditions and capital allocation. Only advice to execs: keep up the good work.

"Not Awesome - Honestly, there is no "Pro" I would use to describe Symantec as an employer."

I worked at Symantec (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Benefits were okay I guess.
Compensation was on the lower end of acceptable.
The usual cliche - "The people" was what kept me (and others) around for so long. A small subset of the people were great.

There was once potential to get things done, make a difference and be rewarded. Sadly, all of that disappeared when the more capable leaders left or were RIF'd.

Thankfully, almost all of the "good" people have moved on to bigger and better things elsewhere.

    Cons

If you are located outside Mountain View, and you are not in a sales role, you will not progress your career.
If you are not friends with a VP, you will not progress your career.
If you want to progress your career, this is not the place for you.
If you have ethics or morals, you will probably not fit in.
They were not keen on remote-working.
If you expect any experienced managers to do anything to help you or make your working life better, you will be disappointed.
When the new wave of Not Awesome managers forgot I worked there (I'm only semi-kidding), I spent a few months doing almost nothing.

The CMO organization was decimated and then filled by a Not Awesome CMO.
Senior hires were all "jobs for the boys", and many were completely unqualified and inexperienced.

HR were a completely useless entity. I made a number of complaints about inappropriate behavior and treatment, which were dismissed as a waste of time without any formal investigations.

    Advice to Management

In general, and this probably doesn't apply to the folks that joined from BlueCoat:

You are not as good nor likeable as your ego thinks you are.
Most of your employees have no respect for you or your decision making ability.

The Bluecoat leadership team seem to have a much better handle on how to do things so carry on chucking out the dead wood.

If you are reading this as a Symantec employee, you likely already know that the grass is much greener on the other side.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits including unlimited vacation for salaried employees, ESPP, paid maternity/paternity leave.
With Greg Clark as the new CEO, the company is headed in a very positive direction.

    Cons

I can't think of any. I was part of the Blue Coat acquisition so I am still pretty new at Symantec.
