I worked at Symantec (More than a year)

    Pros

    3 miles from my home

    Cons

The office is just a branch office. This company moves everything to India, so I had to leave for other jobs

    Advice to Management

Move the R&D back to USA!

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Love my team, some really good people working here. Decent pay and benefits, not great for the field, but decent.

    Cons

Money is king, and people are treated like interchangeable cogs in a machine. Since they fired Steve Bennett it is all down to quarterly profit, and I think in the long run that is going to severely damage the company.

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting everything for the quarterly bottom line. Fix before shipping products, not ship then fix. You have some great people, but the best are leaving because they are tired of being treated as low ranking company assets instead of talented, hard working people.

Symantec seems to be on a good path with strong executive leadership. Continue to execute.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reasonably good health benefits and generous equity plans for managers above the director level.

    Cons

Managers playing favorites; executives stoking rivalries between direct reports to create a better work output; unfair and unhelpful performance feedback process.

    Advice to Management

Create a medium-to-long-term business plan that you can realistically achieve and identify the resources you need to accomplish it. Identify the resources you don't need and do all the layoffs at once, instead of the current "layoff of the month club" model. If someone is not performing to plan, provide feedback so they can get on the right path. Do not wait until annual goals are not met to get the train back on the track.

I have been working at Symantec full-time

    Pros

Stable, company has been profitable for a while.
Actual paths for promotions if you put in the effort
Compensation is good when accounting for RSUs / grants / bonuses
Benefit package is good, lots of perks

    Cons

Older company has some people stuck in their ways.
Not new or cutting edge technologies for the most part.
Some bureaucracy with the larger company.

    Advice to Management

Look for opportunities to reduce overhead. Some people are guilty of paper-pushing or creating unnecessary work for others.

    Pros
