I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people in general. Nice on site cafe (Mountain View Campus). Decent health care plans. Upwards opportunities for job development and mobility between business units.

    Cons

PTO plan is gone, now arranged time off with manager. Wellness planning embraced (Open floorplans, DIET everything in the vending machines). Lack of direction, still a collection of business units which do not work together and often conflict, worked through multiple groups where there was no true direction or leadership. 5(?) CEO's in 7 years.

    Advice to Management

Too many managers going in too many different directions.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Smart People
    Passionate folks
    Leader in field

    Cons

Lack of stability and too many layoffs
4 CEO's during my time there
    Poor pay compared to competitors

    Advice to Management

I doubt anyone from management will read this, but if they do - figure out how to distribute the wealth to hard working employees who are working from paycheck to paycheck versus doing layoff after layoff.

    I worked at Symantec full-time

    Pros

Associated with Norton Anti Virus. But other products are so so

    Cons

Bad management, too much churn at the top causing constant change in "strategy" and focus. The top management has changed since I worked I worked there. So things may be better now.

    Advice to Management

Keep the top management in place and execute on strategy instead of constantly changing it,

    Pros

Consumer BU has a great leader in Fran Rosch. He's honest, fair and dedicated and inspires employees to come to work and do their best.

    Cons

New LifeLock leadership has come in and taken on key roles in which they aren't overly qualified for. This has changed the culture significantly as they were very start up focused versus Norton which has been established and working as a strong corporation.

    Advice to Management

Do all you can to keep good employees who not only drive the business but are leaders that help develop the people and deliver on culture.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have worked for Symantec in the technical support department for 11 years and got to know many talented people. Worked on the flagship products such as Data Loss Prevention and learned more about the computer security industry. The co-workers I knew were dedicated and put customers first despite obstacles they had to overcome.

    Cons

The IT infrastructure was dated and when arriving to work some days a site wide outage would occur. Management also outsourced some IT functions such as Help Desk. Tools used for tracking customer tickets were unreliable and sometimes emails or customer case data would be deleted without an explanation.

Career growth could be slowed as HR required employees to stay in their department for 2 years. If your manager decided you were a critical resource then your career growth was halted as they could prevent any movement to other departments. The quarterly layoffs and reorganizations created a culture of fear and uncertainty.

Certain offices are currently being reduced to 150 seats and some may close due to recent BlueCoat acquisition. Cost cutting has also taken place while I was employed in part to venture capitalist such as Bain Capital having a seat on the board of directors.

    Advice to Management

Management has not listened to employees for years despite sending out employee feedback for a quarterly review. Employees are the greatest asset, but Symantec has forgotten that as they focus on cost cutting and shareholder value. If Symantec wants to attract and retain top talent they must create a employee focused culture.
