I worked at Symantec (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture at Symantec encourages a strong work/life balance. The benefits are great and go above and beyond.

    Cons

Things felt a bit uncertain at times mainly due to frequent changes in C-level management, restructuring departments and work groups, and overall direction.

    Pros

Large company, products are used by people around the world

    Cons

Very political environment, disorganized, no real onboarding for new employees made through acquisition

    Advice to Management

Transparency about how things actually get done. I hate to use the "p" work ("Process"), but some kind of handbook on how to do common tasks would be really helpful. You hire smart people, and smart people will make up new ways of doing things, which leads to chaos.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Well rewarded financially, they wanted to retain top talent.

    Cons

There was a shift to get top talent to move to Cali - if you didn't want to move, your career stalled out.

    Advice to Management

Don't push great talent to look elsewhere by pressuring them to move to CA. Not everyone wants to live there to be promoted to higher level positions.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Leading company in a very attractive space. The company has made many good moves recently and there is lots of optimism with the stock price doing well. After the split of Veritas there is more focus. There is good work life balance

    Cons

Some of the businesses are legacy and life there may be different. There is a lot of pressure to keep the cash cows churning but with little support or broader recognition, which may be depressing for people in those groups.

    Advice to Management

Need more top down guidance to offer opportunities for women. Based on some of the reports that I have heard, there is more that can be done to ensure pay equality for women

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved the team I was on and the people I worked with!

    Cons

With management changes (every year for 7 years) we were constantly waiting for the dust to settle and it never did.

    Advice to Management

Oust the Board of Directors, they are not making good decisions and are only looking for a quick return on their investment.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Large company with lots of opportunities.

    Cons

Went through a series of reductions in force. Will need to integrate BlueCoat and Lifelock

    Advice to Management

Take a break from M&A and build out what you have today.

    Pros

Great culture. Very supportive management. It is also a great job if you love to travel, if you get into the right role.

    Cons

A lay off can come with no warning or logical reason. It can make it difficult to feel comfortable in your role, no matter how much value you bring.

    Advice to Management

I think the transparency has been much better since Greg too the leadership role. I would work there again if I see an opening.
