I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed the atmosphere and the camaraderie. The benefits are fantastic and the people are fun to work with. When I first started working there, it had a very "garage in Silicon Valley" vibe.

    Cons

Like all large software companies in this economy. It's hard to know when you'll get laid off. When I first started working there, it had a very "garage in Silicon Valley" vibe. At the end of my tenure, it felt like a large, stuffy corporation.

    Advice to Management

Direct reports are the most important part of the business. It's hard to stay focused and win when you're constantly thinking about getting laid off.

    Pros

Worked with some very sharp people from all parts of the world. Had the chance to work on multiple cutting edge technologies like virtualization and Cloud.

    Cons

RIFs seem to happen fairly frequently there. I was fortunate to make it through about 3 major ones and be transitioned into new teams as part of that doing. Unfortunately after 10 years didn't make the last one.

I worked at Symantec as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good office culture, people are friendly and greet each other.
    Snack bar
Bagel Tuesdays? (or was it another day)
Intern contribution do matter even though software stacks are huge.
Close to a mall for food and shopping

    Cons

Not many programs for interns, only got to know some other interns from own lunches
Rather slow start to get into working on projects
    Can feel lost sometimes

    Advice to Management

Invest a little more in intern programs. The STAR program is probably pretty good, but not as much for the other departments. It was a shame I didn't really get to know many other interns during my time there.
