    Pros

Use to be good place until the unfortunate happens

    Cons

Too polical with racist tendency. Tree years ago it was a mix race and origin leadership. Today if you are not cacasian, your limit is either Sr. Manager or Sr. Principal. If you want to challenge it you are shown the door (under the cover of layoffs)

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the bigots and be Honorable and lawful.

    Pros

Yet to find the career pros... Cafe is decent. Landscaping is nice. New gym at HQ is "meh" but the trainers are pretty good

    Cons

    Insane instability!!
    Zero growth potential
    Horrible and expensive benefits
Mind boggling political games at all levels
Most real talent here has left or trying to leave as fast as possible.
    HR is REALLY broken
Finance makes decisions for all other departments
    Illogical cost cutting
Good ol' boy system is rampant
Women are treat very poorly - it's so bad it's cliche
Anyone smart enough to effect change is laid off and replaced with ineffective, low cost "yes men"

    Advice to Management

Too bad you didn't notice your customers or employees. Maybe you should at your next company

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

None -- getting a reasonably fat payoff check after 10++ years was about it.

    Cons

Gosh -- where does one start?

No one knows about a lot of historical decisions that were actually good ones, so each new suck up manager they hire does a complete reboot. Result is whole groups let go regularly, staff working in fear of redundancy, no risk takers left.

The company should be shutdown and closed for all the lack of innovation. Internally they're all "shiny new products" but customers couldn't care less as it takes 1-2 years on some products to ever get them to work.

Engineering is a black hole that you cannot believe a single date from and when they regularly miss their targets, others (E.G. PM's, TPM's, Mktg. etc) get zapped instead of fixing the problem.

Management team is related to dinosaurs named Jekyll & Hyde -- you would be well advised to record 1x1's and confirm all meetings with a email notes to CYA.

The company is so ill from layoff after layoff after layoff the deadwood left behind is part of the Old Boys Club = suck ups that don't contribute.

If you are unwilling to suck up, keep your mouth completely shut, be a yes-person, never criticise, work insane hours (they don't mention the middle of the night conference calls with India) then you'll do well. Until they decide you're superfluous to requirements and set you up to jettison you as well!

    Advice to Management

You're all leaches and treat employees like chattels. Sell the company to whomever you're positioning it for a sale to and take your fat payoffs and leave as the rats are already!

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits, a lot of coverage options with reasonable pricing. Great gym and decent cafeteria. Good work-life balance, primarily for those who are hourly employees. Some good management but unfortunately they tend to be the ones with the least influence.

    Cons

Compensation is a joke. At least in my department, the majority of employees are SEVERELY under paid for comparable jobs in our industry. EXTREMELY HIGH and CONSTANT turn over on all levels of the organization (from entry-VP positions). We are doing nothing to fix this problem and have nothing in place to develop new employees. Opportunity for career development is a joke unless you want to use your 6 grand education allowance to fund your job related classes. If you want to use your education allowance towards a degree not fitting your specific job position to a T, then prepare for intense scrutiny and probable denial. They are looking ways to cut cost at every turn, department events are a joke. If you are coming from an environment like retail or food service, then this place is a step up. If you are coming from another tech company, unless you hold a golden degree (like engineering), or are a sales magician, then get ready for a mediocre experience at best.

    Advice to Management

Adequately compensate employees who deserve it, 25 dollar gift cards only go so far. Stop ignoring employees who BS the system. The abundance of favoritism, along with management looking the other way for people who don't actually work is so discouraging! This has lead to the air of apathy we have in the department. STOP BEING CHEAP. Give opportunities, help employees grow beyond their position and their department. Be more selective in your employment process. Hiring terrible contractors and then converting the best of the worst leads you to a lot of regret later on when their productivity plummets even more. Good luck

Politics! Politics! Politics! Cost control! Cutting costs! Layoff! Layoff!! layoff! Split and outsource! Outsource and Split!

    Cons

Office is close to my home and the company offers free parking.

    Advice to Management

Few listens and just don't bother mentioning.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The HQ campus is in a good location and there's always parking available.

    Cons

Attitude of management is "you're lucky to have a job - we can replace you with a snap of the fingers". That's why they're bleeding talent and can't replace it. No attempt to leverage the skills of current employees to the point of contempt. No cooperation between business units, sub-par pay and benefits, no increases, no career growth, no company growth, poisonous atmosphere, excessive secrecy, Q to Q mentality. If this were 2009, I'd say consider working here. In 2015, you have no need with all the opportunities available at strong companies everywhere.

    Advice to Management

Your Deloitte consultants are in their 20s and are good at Powerpoint. Consider relying on your actual employees and consult them for their knowledge and skills, and maybe even recognize them for it instead of treating them like they're expendable.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good culture for learning and collaboration with smart techies. Challenging projects and tasks per releases. Team members are very knowledgeable and have a willingness to transfer knowledge. Some of the brightest techies in the industry. Applies formal and structured process to projects making outputs/results predictable.

    Cons

Some managers are just people/resource scheduler leads and attribute no technical contribution. Most of the time, delegates and pushes technical responsibilities to employees with more technical skill-set, then takes credit for the work not rewarding them for their contribution during annual reviews. Steve Benet attempted to remove this extra layer of waste in management, but it just came back full force since his departure. No training to grow and enhance QA department. Promotions are based on brown-nosing then technical abilities or skills. Very hard to get promoted if you don't know the secret hand shake or password into the group.

    Advice to Management

Hiring knowledgeable QA managers that are team players and are also concern with growing the QA teams knowledge, enabling them to be more efficient and productive for future projects. Bring the level of pay to be more competitive with other software companies. Bring back the profit sharing plan and also include the lowly QA folks, the folks who ensures that your product does not blow up the customers machine the first time it installs or operates.

    I worked at Symantec full-time

    Pros

    Decent salary for some people

    Cons

Extremely bad management from the first line management all the way to the top. The management behaves in such a way that induces good people to leave the company. They don't recognize valuable employees and instead let other non-contributing members shine. They complain about all sorts of costs, including training and providing basic amenities to make employees comfortable.

    Advice to Management

Fire the incompetent top executives and managers. Fire yourself.
