I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A generally congenial place to work.

    Cons

Poorly-managed un-enlightened "old school" management from top to bottom whose ineffectiveness and political antics are almost worthy of Dilbert's pointy-haired manager.

    Advice to Management

Hire a culture change consultancy and then follow their advice to replace yourselves with a management team that knows how to lead an organization to greatness. You can't change the people you have, you can only change which people you have...

I worked at Symantec as an intern

    Pros

Let us work on our own, good guidance by immediate supervisor, got to sit in on conferences and team meetings

    Cons

Not enough work, got stuck on Java project instead of C++ project that was promised

    Advice to Management

More interaction with interns, try and create more a mentoring environment

    Pros

high compensation, awesome benefits, lots of long-time employees

    Cons

you have to work in the "right" group or work for the "right" boat. If your boss sucks and you are stuck with the team, you are screwed.

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice people there, esp at the individual contributor level, who are collaborative and helpful. Also get to learn about a wide range of software products. And if you are in the right role, there is chance for international travel.

    Cons

Too many products - need to focus on fewer products and invest more Eng and mktg in them. After Symantec buys a company, the products tend to languish. Too much politics in middle/upper mgmt. Everyone just nods their head with what the person above them wants to do. As a result the right/tough decisions are not made. All good talent from acquisitions leaves when they vest out (as I did)

    Advice to Management

Focus on fewer, high-growth products. Eng is spread too thin. And l

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Benefits are Amazing
    - Good Pay
    - Good Vacation/Sick Time policies

    Cons

    - Lack of communication between management leads to poor execution at team levels.
    - When personnel leave, no replacements and who's left shoulders the weight of the people who have left.
    - No real chance for movement within the company on the US Side, as within my work area, it's become evident that our positions are being outsourced to eventually eliminate a US Team.

    Advice to Management

Communicate between managers, get on the same page, pass down the corroborated decision/direction.

    Pros

Good benefits. They really seem to focus on diversity throughout their organizations.

    Cons

It is a big company and sometimes it seems like processes have taken over for real management.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

When John Thompson was CEO, Symantec ranked as one of the best places to work in Silicon Valley. He was a great leader and inspired many. Under John, the culture was everyone working together for what was best for the company. Departments cooperated, it was crazy busy in a good way, and people loved it.

    Cons

If you follow the news, you'll know that there has been tremendous turnover at the CEO level the past 5 years. What starts at the top rolls downhill and the culture has evolved to one of fear. They have solid products that I still use. I hope they can be great again for their employees.
