I have been working at Symantec as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The transparency within the company was excellent; even as an intern, I felt like I clearly knew the objective of not only my own team but the company as a whole. The adoption of Agile is obviously working for Symantec, and it was a wonderful time getting first-hand experience in that kind of environment.

    Cons

Some of the technology I worked on seemed "old" to me at times, but there still was a lot of cutting edge technology being used in some of the newer platforms.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing! My experience as an intern was made me highly intrigued in working for the company post-graduation.

    Pros

Use to be good place until the unfortunate happens

    Cons

Too polical with racist tendency. Tree years ago it was a mix race and origin leadership. Today if you are not cacasian, your limit is either Sr. Manager or Sr. Principal. If you want to challenge it you are shown the door (under the cover of layoffs)

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the bigots and be Honorable and lawful.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good compensation. Company appears to be growing and innovating. Flexible schedule. very good work/life balance

    Cons

Lots of management and process changes over the last few years / shifting direction... This does seem to be settling down now.

Not necessarily using the latest technologies. At times the work isn't exciting or engaging

I worked at Symantec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There will always be a need for backup software.

    Cons

High turnover, large legacy product, management doesn't have foresight or direction.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

People are intelligent, pay is good. My interview process was pretty non-technical and laid back. Travel is available if you have a geographically diverse team, or an important project.

    Cons

CEO uncertainty often, everyone wants to build everything themselves instead of using an existing solution, budget issues are everywhere. We have to jump through hoops to get hardware.

    Advice to Management

Management is good, but the architects seem to give too much free reign to engineers in system design. The result is sloppy, or inflexible design.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

direct managers really there to help
    World class products
great partnership deals (Discounts for products or services)

    Cons

The Board of Directors, seriously the Board of Directors hired a great CEO (Bennett) and then 1.5 years into his STATED 5 year plan they fired him because "He was not showing profits quickly enough" EVEN though he stated the first 2-3 years would be a rebuilding time. This came after the same board fired the prior CEO. These are the changes that I am speaking to.
Additionally the board continues to claim that they are following the principals that Bennett laid down however they have altered each of the five tenants from focusing on the front line employees to focusing on them example the Bennett goal of "Attract and retain the best quality employees" has been changed to "Attract top talent to our executive team"

    Advice to Management

Bring back Bennett or at least someone that is looking out for the LONG TERM success of the company. These policies to boost the short term profitability do nothing but destroy Moral and make people look for other jobs.
