Larger company with reasonable benefits. Employees were great to work with.

    Cons

Management is slow to change. Salary reviews were a farce.

    Advice to Management

Need to learn to cooperate between departments and reward employees fairly.

    Pros

    Fair work-life balance
Good for people who are need a after school start

    Cons

Old-school style, where many things are done based on relationships.
No strict dress-code for programmers, but the company used to have such rules before, and most people still follow those rules.

I have been working at Symetra as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Symetra has flexible hours, and my team had incredibly knowledgeable and supporting members. They were supportive of my prioritization of school, and taught me a lot in terms of hard skills. Team members were always willing to help answer questions or teach you more efficient methods.

    Cons

There is still the very old school silo system in place. Symetra is also pretty resistant to change, although they push for it. There is also a bit of dog-eat-dog mentality and office politics going on, but what company doesn't?

I worked at Symetra full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company with a lot of exciting growth in it's industry. Good jobs for people just starting out. Great benefits. Staff is fairly young - early to late twenties mostly.

    Cons

The sales department doesn't do enough to prepare its associates for state exams. They spent a lot of money to purchase the books but don't invest in classes that would be helpful in giving tips on where to concentrate studying. Given those limitations, they drop you if you don't pass the test a second time - or even the first time in some cases.

    Advice to Management

A lot of the management seemed inexperienced. Would be ideal to have more depth in this area. Get some more experienced people in there to help balance out the company dynamic.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are amazing people to work with.

    Cons

even with 7+ years of experience, they still pay people based on how visible they are and not by how well they do there job. you can do your job well for years and never make it to the mid-salary range.

    Advice to Management

People dont feel valued when they remain at the bottom of the salary range, while new employees hire in at and above your salary, with less experience. I will recommend this company to a friend, as long as they dont stay past 3 or 4 years.

    Pros

Great team members! Company wide focus on service in the community. Very flexible schedule and work options. Top leadership has clear vision and ensures everyone works towards that vision. Drive to work as a team.

    Cons

Middle management looses site of upper management vision. Does not do what they say they will. Loses team focus.

    Advice to Management

Do what you say you will and stay focused. Stand up for your employees and do not assume an issue is always their fault before hearing the facts.

Company with great products, good employees. Some policies can be pretty flexible depends on your managers. It is a growing company,

It is a growing company. Sometimes you don't have work life balance. Department hired a new manager recently. Micro manager.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good. Pay is competitive in my experience.

    Cons

The leadership values EPS and ROE, not people. CEO takes some pride in the fact that he "doesn't read management books." Long-term planning is just numbers and wishing, not real planning. There isn't a focus on what we do well. It's just "grow and bring in more profitable business." The word customer does not come up very often in management discussions.

    Advice to Management

Find out why Symetra's existence is good for the planet and embrace it.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are great, with 3 options to choose from for medical. You have your choice of a transit pass for $8 taken out of every paycheck, or a parking pass for around $60 a paycheck. Tries to support work/life balance with a 38.75hr work week. Business casual dress code--most people wear jeans.

    Cons

Training is sub-par and seems to be an after thought with much of the management. Advancement is not consistent with seniority or meritocracy; it is at the whim of the management as to who will progress and who will stay behind.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the problem employees faster than you have or haven't in the past. It would also be nice if management would take the time to learn exactly what it is that the other employees do so as to provide better support.
