I have been working at Symetra full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company truly believes and advocates in employee work life balance. Benefits are very good and starting vacation is above average.

    Cons

On site availability of creature comforts (food, direct kitchen supplies) are non existent.

    Advice to Management

At least put kitchen supplied so you can have something to eat on so you don't need to bring your own plates or utensils.

I have been working at Symetra (More than a year)

    Pros

The Bellevue location is a nice area and it is easy to walk different places for lunch.

    Cons

I worked under a few different managers and I found one of them to be wildly unprofessional and inappropriate.

    Advice to Management

Must learn to be more professional in the workplace and how to respect boundaries.

I worked at Symetra full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is not much to say.

    Cons

I witnessed several unethical decisions being made and for my own personal morality reason I had to leave this place behind.

    Advice to Management

Conduct frequent ethics training for your employees.

I have been working at Symetra full-time

    Pros

    The benefits are fairly reasonable.

    Cons

There are a lot of "cliques" here and managers tend to play favorites.

I wish Symetra would allow me to telecommute. The employees that do log on late, log off early and take 2 hour lunches. A little tip for the telecommuters: don't post on social media about the non work related fun you are having during work hours.

    Advice to Management

Don't play favorites. Keep closer watch on telecommuters.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I guess one pro would be that I can wear jeans to work. Other than that there there really is anything else I can think of.

    Cons

Long hours and low pay with little potential for growth. A lot of gossip. Incompetent managers are aplenty. Low morale throughout.

    Advice to Management

Don't just trust what you hear. Take a look for yourself at each department and make changes where they are needed.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some good, hardworking, smart people at Symetra that I truly believe want to do their best for the company. The sales department can be stressful at times but can also be fun at times; so there tends to be a decent balance of stress and fun.

    Cons

The political game is blatantly played at this place and some of the managers here are not qualified to be in the position they are currently in. I have seen this in the departments I have the most contact with: Sales, Marketing and Product; but I’ve heard about it happening in other departments as well.

    Advice to Management

Like I said, there are some good, hard working people at this company but they are being held back by managers that play the political game. Politics are very abundant with the managers that have more tenure then most employees at Symetra. They will use their tenure, their contacts that are other long tenured employees and years of perfecting the political game to get what they want and climb the ladder. Really, it's a lot of long tenured managers promoting other long tenured employees; often times neither one is qualified to be in their position. This hurts various departments and the overall company.

If Sumitomo wants their investment in Symetra to be successful, they really need to weed out the unqualified managers and promote more “experienced” (not necessarily long tenured) internal employees or hire “experienced” employees from outside of the company that have the knowledge of doing what the position they are hired to do requires. If this is done, you'll really see the good employees, that are being held back by managers that play the political game, start to come out of the woodwork which will only help the company flourish and stay relevant with the competition. I really want to continue working for this company but I don’t see myself staying for too much longer if things don’t noticeably change fairly soon.

    Pros

Great company to work for. I'm very happy to part of the team.

    Cons

Benefits here are great, my only gripe is that I wish the pay was a little more. However, I understand the whole compensation package when adding in benefits is very good.
