I have been working at Symetra full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Compensation is competitive
    - Eligible for performance bonus yearly
    - Sick Time and PTO are separate; you get 1 week of sick time at the beginning of the year
    - Bus pass is subsidized - comes right out of your paycheck ($10/paycheck - maybe)
    - Great on-boarding "welcome to Symetra" type training/orientation
    - Education reimbursement/assistance
    - Only have to work for 6 months in position before looking for other jobs internally
    - Ergonomic workstations (raising desks)
    - Multiple computer monitors
    - Accommodating to new hires (equipment, supplies, etc)
    - Lots of Symetra "swag" when you start; my cube is covered in it :)
    - Great location (convenient to walk to restaurants, grocery store, transit center, etc)
    - Wellness incentive program (discounts on insurance with participation)
    - All employees are issued a laptop -- no desktops
    - Secure building/elevator access/stair access w/ badge

    Cons

    - No training in my department for my specific job; learn as you go; procedures unclear/not in place
    - VERY small team (most of us are in CT)
    - Floundered for the first month or so, figuring out how to do my job
    - PTO accrual is slow
    - Disconnect from rest of company
    - Uncertainty about new Japan acquisition

    Advice to Management

Teams should be more integrated, and work together more inter-departmentally. Lots of talent here, just needs to be better utilized.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There were good places to eat around bellevue. Good 401k match. Dollar for dollar up to 6%. No silly 50% of 6% crap. Fully vested from the start.

    Cons

Expectations are not communicated. Annual Performance metrics seem to disregard all good feedback during the year and be very subjective unsupported by any examples.

    Advice to Management

    Hire more external consultants.

    Pros

Larger company with reasonable benefits. Employees were great to work with.

    Cons

Management is slow to change. Salary reviews were a farce.

    Advice to Management

Need to learn to cooperate between departments and reward employees fairly.

    Pros

    Incredible employees....often way over worked.

    Cons

Upper management out of touch with the realities of front line employees.

    Advice to Management

For giving your hard working employees less than a 100% bonus while upper management makes millions off of the sale to Sumitomo. This is on the heels of stellar sales above plan and 5 years of above full payout in much more difficult environments. Pretty sure you could have negotiated that in...like you did yours.

    I worked at Symetra full-time

    Pros

Employees were good people and good intentions. Safeco culture and history and strength were a great basis. Upper management changes blew up a functioning company. Not sure what the Japanese are going to do with it but it will be interesting to watch whether they dismantle Bellevue for a move to the East Coast or absorb the clients along with another good buy.

    Cons

Went Public and lost focus. Brought in big wigs from big Insurance Companies to "fix it". Lost and laid off a lot of good employees. Then cleaned house again and cleaned out the big wigs. Seem to be trying to find focus again and seem to have been perfect for acquisition. Product mix seems to be a struggle as well. Life Division seems to be the continued albatross for the company.

    Advice to Management

Find a focus and stay sincere. While you'd love to be a big fish and make everyone loads of money... perhaps that isn't what this company is meant to do.

I have been working at Symetra full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People are friendly and work together to get the job done.

    Cons

Management is clueless about everything! They have no idea how to run a project and assume people will work late nights and weekends to finish a project that they gave unrealistic deadlines too. Not enough people to get the job done. They would rather meet a date with a project than have a better quality project a few weeks later.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees fair. Give them a life outside of work! Only promote their favorites.

I have been working at Symetra (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have been working for Symetra since November 2015 in the Enfield CT office. This A growing company that is on the move! Upper-management is very engaged with the staff and seeks fresh new opinions and ideas. Great benefits. The HR department is very focused on employee development. It is very important to work for a company that is aligned with your personal morals and beliefs. This company is definitely aligned with mine!

    Cons

None come to mind. Great company

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on growing the company. Look out competitors!

    Pros

    Fair work-life balance
Good for people who are need a after school start

    Cons

Old-school style, where many things are done based on relationships.
No strict dress-code for programmers, but the company used to have such rules before, and most people still follow those rules.

I worked at Symetra full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Location is decent. There are some decent people there.

    Cons

No on-boarding, barely any feedback on how you're doing.
People keep getting promoted into management positions and have zero leadership skills.
    Bullying!
Cannot trust HR to have your back.
Working you with un-communicated expectations. If you ask questions, you're looked down upon and they think you don't know your job.
Turn over is ridiculous in the Retirement Division yet everyone is afraid to voice their concerns for fear of being the next to go.
Do as I say, not as I do mentality.
If you're not IN, you're out of there if they don't like you.
It's high school all over again. The good, the bad, the cliques, everything.
    Pay was not competitive.

    Advice to Management

Lead your employees. Communicate expectations and don't expect the world of them unless you build them up. Upper leadership should look at the turn over rates and employees leaving the company and why.
