I worked at Symrise full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company itself has a lot going for it right now and is very recognizable on the food industry. They’re growing a lot and making some smart business decisions. Symrise works with a lot of big companies so a lot of interesting projects are happening in each business unit. There are also several international training programs that are great experience if you are presented with the opportunity to participate.

    Cons

Being a Lab Technician, you have the opportunity to go to Germany for Flavorist training. It sounds really great in the interview, but it is most definitely not a guarantee. You are a lab tech for 2 years minimum, but most likely longer. The lab techs don’t assist flavorists in creating formulas, do not attend any meetings, and attend minimal tastings (even if you made the flavor). Most of the time you are just making a formula and there’s very little exposure to anything else. Should you decide this is not for you, I found it difficult to change departments.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees if they want a different career path, and give lab techs more exposure and more training so they get a better idea of what it’s like to actually be a flavorist. I feel that this would make the 2+ years as a tech a much better learning experience, as well as motivate more techs to want to wait to go to Germany.

I have been working at Symrise part-time

    Pros

Great work environment. Small company feel with big company benefit. Company had a few troubles, politically but didn't affect smaller people like me, the intern. Laguna beach location is great, the people are super nice. Could have learned more but was a great place to start a career.

    Cons

Could have paid more for a large global company like Symrise

    Pros

Fun projects come from time to time. Pretty good benefits.

    Cons

The North American headquarters in Terboro, New Jersey has an extremely toxic work environment. Especially in Flavor Development. The upper management mistreats people. Everyone seems to be out for themselves.

    Advice to Management

Don't talk about people behind their backs. They hear about it eventually.
