I worked at Synapse Product Development full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Synapse is full of wonderful people, and can be a great place to work if you consider the location, work-life balance, and the company community. As some bullet points:

If it's something you haven't already done in your career, you will get useful experiences interacting with clients and vendors.
There will be smart people in your discipline you can learn something from if you happen to be on the same projects.
Most everyone is very friendly and willing to help you if you run into problems.

    Cons

There isn't a clear path for career growth.
Synapse treats its employees like family, including the ones that under-perform or contribute negatively on projects.
The work (particularly in software) can be repetitive.
The Software team has an identity problem. They have experience and are good at rapid prototyping and integrating components, but claim to want to ditch that to work on higher level algorithms.

Overall, Synapse has a few significant problems, and their refusal to acknowledge any of them can make it hard to fully buy in, especially when they run counter to the moral speeches.

    Advice to Management

Be constantly self-evaluating. It can be great to treat your employees like family, but let it be a family with a ruthless streak.

    Pros

Awesome coworkers. Tough but cool projects with a wide variety of clients. Strong focus on a family atmosphere. Lots of opportunity to learn.

    Cons

A few people have stayed for several years and their bad habits have infiltrated the system. That's not easy to undo.

    Advice to Management

Great momentum these days. Feels like we're on the right track. Looking forward to what's to come!

I have been working at Synapse Product Development full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A large portion of the Synapsters are actually friends and hang out with each other outside of the office.
The office environment is creative and collaborative.
The majority of the engineers are very willing to help teach younger engineers and just as willing to learn from younger engineers.

    Cons

Many of the product design is doing the same thing that was done before.
Small client base and small product variety.

    Advice to Management

Branch out to find more state of the art, up and coming companies that will have interesting technologies that need to be productized.

    Pros

Sense of community and cross-departmental teamwork, flexible schedules, continually challenged, open-door policy, great benefits.

Rare opportunities for training or growth, or organizational recognition for operations, marketing and finance teams (non-engineering groups).

    Pros

Synapse has a way of attracting interesting and smart people who like to work hard, have fun, and solve challenging problems. There is a wide variety of projects so work never gets boring. The people are definitely the best thing about working at Synapse. There is a strong biking culture and the downtown location makes it convenient to bike to work. Flexibility to work from home on occasion.

    Cons

Tight schedules. Salaries are not as competitive as they should be. Tendency to say one thing with regards to culture and values but do the opposite.

    Advice to Management

Don't just listen to employees. Actually follow through with their advice. If you want to hire the best and brightest people you need to pay salaries and benefits that can compete with all the other tech companies.

I have been working at Synapse Product Development full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Interesting work from some of the biggest brands/most exciting names in technology.
Everyone genuinely loves coming to work each day, which is so rare and contributes to the high, infectious energy.
The environment and culture facilitates open communication, across departments and levels of the organization.
Work with smart people that you want to grab a beer with after work.
    Spontaneous nerf gun wars.

    Cons

The past year has been a year of transition, upper management has changed hands, and many people were put into leadership positions without proper training.
Historically, a lack of diversity -- though this is actively changing.

    Pros

The main thing I like is that we work in a culture of strong mutual respect. Curiosity is the key quality people exhibit and it let's people focus on solving problems rather than politics. Failure is tolerated as long as you own the problem. Asking for help early is always encouraged

    Cons

Currently, the company is facing short term business challenges requiring a change in process

"Wacky, exciting, fun, chaotic place to work!"

    Pros

Synapse provides opportunities to build very cool products using some very exciting technologies and tools in such areas as medical devices, consumer electronics and laboratory automation. The people are whip smart, social, fun-loving and, for the most part, willing to help each other. Politics is at a minimum and senior leadership is willing to share information to a large degree.

    Cons

The place is chaotic with little, or no, development processes defined or followed. schedules are short and project success depends, to a large degree, on personal heroics of team members. Lack of process leads to different projects reinventing the same wheel. Effort is often misdirected or wasted. There is no defined process to institutionalize corporate knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Senior management needs to be more business savvy both is getting projects and managing them. Better accounting and financial oversight will help too.
