I worked at Syngenta full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you want to work in the government, but can't find a job there, Syngenta would be great for you.

    Cons

Syngenta can't get out of there own way. The BEST people have left over the past 7 years. What is left is average, slow, non passionate people that are not making the company a great company.

    Advice to Management

    Fire yourselves....

I worked at Syngenta full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They had free coffee, tea and other beverages. Parking was free in a covered ramp. Benefits were very good.

    Cons

Poor systems, could not find data to do my job, no direction, staggering amounts of time wasted just trying to get simple information - had to use one-off Excel spreadsheets with questionable data and sourcing just to pull anything together. There was constant confusion about basic data (i.e. sales $, sales units), let alone anything more complicated. No standard procedures, processes, organization, etc. (I was left waiting for an hour - twice - during my on-site interview. I should have left then.) Office environment was extremely noisy. Titles are also very confusing - everyone seems to be a "Head" of something. Very few women in leadership positions. Run, don't walk!

    Advice to Management

Invest in a reliable ERP system and use it. A $20 billion company should not be run on Excel spreadsheets! Get organized and stop all the time being wasted with people trying to figure out who's on first. Value your employees - don't expect people to work 60-80 hour weeks on a consistent basis. Promote more women and sort out your titles so employees have a clue who does what.

    Pros

The scientists are top-notch in their field - great work with.

    Cons

R&D upper management are ruthless, heartless at trying to minimize R&D costs. Instead of valuing knowledge transfer (either from new hires or between functions), all they are concerned about is their 'bottom-line' profitability for the shareholders, and when hard times hit (i.e., low sales, low profitability), they cut R&D spend by eliminating jobs, hence instead of knowledge transfer, they engage in "knowledge extraction", where they take your contributions for a while, and then when it's convenient for them, they kick you out into the street. Don't expect to have a job for more than about 5-7 years there (unless you are a foreign national).

    Advice to Management

    don't treat people like crap

I worked at Syngenta full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Syngenta used to be a great company. Unfortunately, it cannot decide on a direction and morale is decreasing quickly.

    Cons

With too much disorganized change, morale is extremely negative. Colleagues are taking frustration and anger out on one another and management has lost all control of their people.

    Advice to Management

Take a step back and quit promoting those whom are disrespectful and use vulgar language in anger towards others - they are not helping the organization in the path forward. Syngenta made great strides moving forward for a long time, now it's playing catch with no light at the end of the tunnel.

I have been working at Syngenta full-time

    Pros

It has a flexible work schedule, work life balance, and great pay & benefits. The people are all very nice.

    Cons

Constant transition and reorganization, lacking clear Roles & Responsibilities making it hard to hold anyone accountable to basic tasks. Performance based off of whether people like you since accountability is so hard to measure. Information regarding key projects/processes is not readily provided and hard to come by. Leadership lacking and no clear strategy which drives the culture of ambiguity. Poor quality outsourcing is common in the company and makes many processes and functions difficult and poorly run. The people that own the relationships with outsourcing appear to not really own – they do what the outsourced provider says instead of managing the vendor. No one seems to know how anything gets done. On paper the values and culture of the organization look good but it's not a culture of empowerment or inclusion. Feels a lot like the 1950s. There are many high paid employees that do basic administrative work because of lack of empowerment.

    Advice to Management

Get involved a bit more in the details and processes to understand how things really get done or don't and who's really doing the work. Build an engaged culture by LEADING the organizational strategy instead of having employees run around in circles trying to guess expectations.

    Pros

    Co-workers are fun. Little micromanaging.

    Cons

Management backs bullies even it everyone else is clearly upset at his/her actions. Frequently told if you don't like it you should leave.

    Advice to Management

No need to offer any advice, they just tell you to "shut up"

    I worked at Syngenta full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, Swiss company. Tries to do the right thing overall.

    Cons

Heavy beaurocracy, mired in politics and inertia. With few exceptions, extremely poor technical leadership. Immature managers promoted based on the Peter Principle. No attention to career development and few opportunities for growth. You are supposed to be grateful to have a job there. People stay There forever, which disincentivizes them to learn, grow, and adapt to change. Promotions are not based on qualifications or skills, so management is erratic and mercurial. Decision making is irrational, and colored by personal whim, self interest, and politics - not the betterment of the organization or its strategic vision. Thus the company itself suffers and will continue to struggle to keep up with its competitors. Pay is not competitive with the market in the U S.

    Advice to Management

Simplify the operation. Be less consensus driven. Take more risks. Invest in good people and trust them.

    Pros

Benefits are great, depending on location and crops you might get to work with, local support can be fantastic or a disaster. Choose wisely where and who might be your manager, some can inspire you.

    Cons

Layers and layers of people to decide or approve anything. Slow processes, terrible HR, all is done by self service web based.

    Advice to Management

Make life more simple and efficient
