    Pros

Senior management takes a very good long-term view of the company and the industry. They take good responsibility for maintaining the computer infrastructure and the office facilities. Although much of the headcount growth is off-shore, they do not do widespread transfers of jobs from the US to off-shore (as their competitor Cadence was doing around 2004-2009). The company is well-positioned as the biggest EDA company. Employee turnover is much lower than many other Silicon Valley companies.

    Cons

Most of the employees are mid-career or senior career. There's not a lot of employees in their 20's.

    Advice to Management

You're doing a great job: long-term steady planning and growth.

    Pros

    Stable
Work can be interesting and challenging
Very capable and competent peer group-employees and managers are very high quality folks!
Work environment is pretty good. (Not spectacular - we could use a little more "fun" factor)
The bonuses pay pretty well consistently
The company works hard not to manage budgets with constant and deep headcount cuts
    Very customer oriented and driven!

    Cons

Too conservative about some things; not a risk-taking company; too much of "this is how we've always done it" or " we've already tried that (10 years ago) and it didn't work"
Take too long to make decisions
Lack of growth in the sector is affecting career mobility of younger workers - and there is a lot of very long time employees who are unlikely to leave and try something new

    Advice to Management

Employees want to hear from Aart and Chi-Foon about the plan to address Global Employee Survey feedback on Rewards and Recognition. Ultimately chosing not to give pay increases while still holding margins and significant cash has many folks feeling a little betrayed after ongoing hard work in very competitive industry.

    Pros

Good technology company with a sound management and leadership at helm. People are
bright and nice to work with. Most of the time managers are flexible as long as work gets done.

    Cons

Synopsys and the EDA industry itself is trying to reinvent itself in terms of creating a more profitable business model. Till a more profitable model is invented, growth is going to be an issue.

    Advice to Management

Continue to maintain the focus and come up with a viable strategy for stronger growth.

    Pros

Great culture, great leadership, ethics, technology and strong pay for performance philosophy compared to other EDA and semiconductor companies in the Valley.

    Cons

Sometimes can be challenging to make big changes, very consensus driven...which is not a bad thing!

    Advice to Management

Recognizing that it's not always the higher grade level employees that make the most impact - continue to value all employees and you will continue to build a strong and loyal employee base. Very satisfied overall though.

    Pros

Very supportive of local community non-profit efforts. Very friendly staff. Opportunities for growth. Great support from management. Flexible working hours when necessary.

    Cons

Company has a mandatory shut down two times a year. Only given 18 days of PTO, in which 15 days are used for shutdown.

    Advice to Management

Great leadership. Company is strong with cash and has flexibility within their market space for additional aquisitions. Synopsys is a true leader in the EDA space.

    Pros

Upper Management values people and truly aims to make Synopsys a great company. They don't just say it, they mean it. They invest in their people. They require all managers to go through a set of courses called "managing at Synopsys" which is quite good. In the R&D ranks they promote from within and there is a lot of opportunity to grow and continually work on challenging projects. They thrive on innovation. It is a conservative company that offers a great work/life balance.
Benefits are outstanding and there bonus program is very good.
Systems and processes are very good.

    Cons

If you are not in R&D the opportunities for growth are limited. If you are in a G&A groups you may be stuck in the same job forever. Because the culture is great, people stay forever and that is not helping the company. Many of those employees are complacent and not contributing much but because they have been there so long, they fly under the radar. If you like working with folks that are okay with being "average" then it's an okay place but if you want to work with A players, it may not be the best place.
It is consensus driven company and the right decisions are often not made in that type of environment.
Upper Mgt is very distant from reality as there are lots of layers of mgt. It is extremely top heavy with lot of people in Dir/VP level roles that have a great work life balance.

    Advice to Management

You have created a great culture where employees are valued. Keep up the great work.
Take a closer look at the Org structure of some BU's. There are lots of folks in high ranks that are not really contributing. You would get a better return by replacing them with lower level folks that get things done.

    Pros

Stable company with lot of cash reserves.
    Num 1 in the industry.

    Cons

Num 1 company does not pay num 1.
Management brings in their buddies as Peers instead of promoting employees.
Management takes credit for all success and does not share to the teams and employees.
Bureaucracy across the board with error resolution being high.
Stock offering is bad. It does not move up. Funny thing, they compare with apple when the market falls but with nothing when market moves up.

    Advice to Management

Employees should not be treated as commodities.
Credit and Recognition should be given.
Change the Crying baby gets more chocolates, way of treating.
