I worked at Synopsys full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Suitable for people that want stability and consistency in their work (lots of people with more than 10 years service). The company has made and continues to make a number of acquisitions, so there is always lots of work for integration.

    Cons

My original company was acquired and wasn't well integrated into Synopsys. The culture of the new company was not aligned with the original company and a lot of talent left as a result.

    Advice to Management

Actively encourage staff to take ownership of their roles to help get the best out of people, make steps to show that you are equal partners when doing acquisitions and provide more training for managers on how to mentor staff.

    Pros

Not many pros. Company is doing well in some sectors, steady company to work for. Salary comes on time.

    Cons

Too much work pressure. Completely customer driven. No chance to work on or enhance your design. Meet the spec and dish out.
No scope of innovation, innovation is actively scorned. Very political layoffs.
No scope of promotion or rapid salary rise. Drab work culture

I have been working at Synopsys (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work life balance is at its best at Synopsys. You also get to work on extremely challenging problems. Great for someone with a PhD in Electrical Engineering who wants to continue to work in the domain of VLSI CAD. They are the leading company in EDA industry and there is solid job stability. Base salaries are competitive and bonuses are reliably distributed end of every year.

    Cons

Aging company with aging employees, very stagnant EDA industry with a very limited market cap, implying no room for scalability and growth. Benefits are minimalistic - no stocks for employees below a very senior level. Health benefit plan is very frugal with high out-of-pocket payment. No free food and no glamorous perks that are becoming so common in the Bay Area these days.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to attract younger talent and keep existing younger talent on board. Find ways to grow even if it means expanding domains, merging with or acquiring other companies etc.

    Pros

Nice company to work for. Supposed to have lots of thoughtful people working in Synopsys.

    Cons

Surprisingly, lots of politics at the middle management ranks. Reward policy is supposed to be performance based but often rewards does not match performance. Performance Review process is not consistently applied with too much emphasis on soft skills and carrying inadequate performers in your group.

    Advice to Management

Make sure practice are uniformly applied across organizations and hierarchies. Need more seasoned senior management as promotions are hard to come by.
