I worked at Synta Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful, bright, and hard working co-workers. Good science. Small company where everyone knows everybody.

    Cons

As with any small company it has a lot of growing pains to work through. Operations and organization are chaotic. This company has experienced very high turnover even during “good times” when spirits should be high. There is virtually no room for advancement, and professional development is not valued. Most people are miserable, overworked and under-appreciated. To that end, HR is completely useless, out-of-touch and is deaf to employee suggestions. Synta pays poorly across the board (expect for senior management), and offers the minimum benefits compared to industry. Its recognition program is weak, arbitrary and administered sporadically.

But the BIGGEST PROBLEM is the CEO who is an arrogant egomaniac with absolutely no leadership skills. He has a complete lack of humility and zero capacity to learn from his past mistakes to the detriment of the company. He bullies his senior management team to the point of poor decision-making. He finger-points when things go wrong because of his bad decisions. CEO is not respected and disliked company-wide. He has a poor reputation outside of Synta as well. He has no interpersonal skills- making interaction with him extremely awkward. If he left the company would be a great place to work!

    Advice to Management

    CEO needs to go.

I have been working at Synta Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers - smart, professional, appreciative and helpful people.

    Cons

Would not recommend to work for this company. Too political. No stability. Lots of structural changes. Lots of B.S.Two layoffs in one year.

    Pros

    employees are friendly & hard-working; almost 4 weeks vacation time;

    Cons

horrible interdepartmental communication; mediocre benefits/pay; required to work overtime; they don't prefer to promote or hire from within (career advancement is virtually non-existent); very low-tech company (ancient computers, internet system, software, lab equipment, etc)

    Advice to Management

suggest executives stop allowing inexperienced CEO to make critical decisions about the direction the company is going & allow more qualified staff & management to lead

    Pros

Synta is based on very solid science and attracts a lot of good and talented scientists. You have a chance to contribute a lot, and you learn a lot. Good teamwork and good teamplay after work.

    Cons

BizDev wasn't as successful as they could be. Sometimes Senior Management was building castles in the sky which couldn't stand reality checks.
Being a medium-size company doesn't allow Synta to promote people within unless someone leaves (which may force some people to leave looking for greener pastures).

    Pros

Synta was like a family. We have gone our separate ways now, but many of us keep in touch still

    Cons

Synta didn't always play by the rules, and in the end, we cut too many corners and our drugs failed

    Advice to Management

Take the time to do things the right way. It might have taken longer, but we would still be around today
