I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time

    Pros

Before working at SEI I had a fairly similar role to the work I've been doing at my client. I drove large-scale programs from start to finish. I love the challenge of bringing to life a revenue driving initiative, saving a failing project, and bringing teams together to get the impossible over the finish line. In the past, it was always enough for me. What I didn't anticipate when joining SEI, was how all the...

    Cons

It is not easy to build a business and that is what you're expected to do. People often hear "local model" and they think work/life balance, but your career is a big part of life here. As an Employee Owner you are expected to help shape the business and define the market - and that's hard- but if it's for you, like it is for me, it's also satisfying as hell.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing- putting people first.

I worked at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

SEI is a great company... - No travel which is awesome for family life - Compensation is good for the hours and efforts you put in - The consultants are fairly nice

      Cons

...if you align it to reality - No matter what they tell you during the interview process, in reality all of the work is staff aug. It's a local model, and there are only so many strategy/sexy consulting gigs, which won't go to SEI because they don't have that kind of brand equity or known thought leadership anyways. - The reality is you will not get rich from working here. Don't think just because you can have ownership...

      Advice to Management

It is a decent company, but please stop making it into what it is not. It will make everyone's life a lot easier. - Stop pushing solution selling since your business model can't support it. How do you expect to sell a solution when you don't have a bench to sell from? You hate bench time since all you care about is billable hours. Plus, the solution has to make sense (selling 5 PMs doesn't count) which you can't control...

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Great people who will support you as if you are family Over 40% of the consultants in my office are women Growth targets that assume slow sustainable profitability; not trying to grow too fast Simple financial KPIs that ensure the office is healthy Employee ownership of drivers that contribute to the business(client work, hiring, business development); management takes care of the boring stuff like benefits,...

      Cons

Not a lot of structure and process; consultants need to govern themselves due to flat org model Not a get rich quick opportunity; consultants need to invest roughly 5 plus years to benefit from the ownership model which is sort of the point that they don't want you to leave Hiring is not perfect; we still hire some folks that are not a fit for SEI Strong culture will be hard to maintain as offices get larger

      Advice to Management

Stay true to the model set up by the founder; keep balanced focus on all 3 pillars Improved communication from the CEO to the offices Keep the work hard/play hard culture

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Simply the smartest, most friendly, articulate, passionate, and humble group of people I've ever worked with. Every place I've ever worked, there were always a select few that fit this bill but they were few and far between. I've found that at SEI, everyone is like that. Everyone has your back, egos are left at the door, everyone feels the sense of ownership. I like being around these people.

      Cons

I honestly can't think of any... it's not for everyone though. I like staff meetings. I like hanging out with my colleagues. I like recruiting and business development. Not everyone can say that.

      Advice to Management

      Steady course.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Love SEI and appreciate the lengthy recruiting process detailing exactly what I was signing up for along with the opportunity to meet a good variety of current employees before finalizing my decision. They have delivered on every promise - no BS here. Love the model, culture and people. Certainly not for everyone, but if it's for you it will quickly become apparent during the interview process and you’ll wonder what...

        Pros

A lot of awesome people and good work/life balance.

        Cons

Drinking, harassment, inappropriate “jokes”, you have to laugh off for THEIR comfort - need a thick skin or it will get to you.

        Advice to Management

It starts at the top (current and former CEO, MDs). Think about how you treat women employees and do better.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

        Pros

I've worked here a little over 5 years and can honestly say it was the best decision I've made career-wise. SEI allows you to grow your skills, to be involved in growing the business, and be valued for your contributions while supporting and encouraging you. It is a company that allows and expects you to be an adult. I personally enjoy the freedom and ability to be a little more creative and involved in how my career...

        Cons

I personally don't see any cons, however, SEI is not for everyone. If you want a very clear career path with a typical corporate structure, then SEI is not for you. You have to be involved and motivated to continue to be engaged in the business and want to do more than just clock in and clock out. There is plenty of support to do so, but if you wait for it to come to you, then you will not be successful here.

        Advice to Management

Continue to evolve and innovate, but don't lose sight of what has made SEI successful. Stay true to the values that have made us strong and able to weather the ups and downs over the years.

I worked at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

I struggled with putting such a low rating on SEI due to the great consultants that work for the company, the friendships I was able to establish, and the fun that I had with them while I worked there. SEI’s culture is truly a social one (but with that also comes consequences that are outlined in Con’s). They are truly some of the best consultants/professionals that I have come across. However, everything else about...

        Cons

Let me start off by saying that while at SEI, I was continually client billable and making money for our office. I was only on the bench once (unbillable) for a very short period of time. I never had a complaint about my work from clients and on more than one occasion was offered a full time role with a client if I left SEI. I say this as to not be viewed as a disgruntle past employee. These are genuine cons that...

        Advice to Management

This isn’t to management itself. This is to all the consultants (particularly ones that have stock ownership). Demand to the Board of Director that a cleaning out of management occur. If you don’t, at a minimum, be smart and jump ship while you can with your dignity. This truly was a great company when I started but the growing egos of the Managing Director’s on up as well as their “circle of friends” are destroying...

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

        Pros

I love sharing the SEI story because everything you hear and see is EXACTLY what you get. Collaborative...Trust...Culture...Collective Value are always top of mind with each employee. SEI hasn't moved away from its guiding principles after 25 years and the sky is the limit. Great people. Great culture. Flat organization. Key traits to a great company.

        Cons

SEI is not for everyone. The company moves in the direction that ALL of its employees collectively take it. The very few reviews out there from those not giving SEI 5 stars are likely from employees who are/were no longer contributing to a level expected of an "employee" owned company.
