I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Potential for great culture, strong focus on work life balance, so many great people.

    Cons

The Cincinnati office has changed over the past couple years since I joined. We advertise an open collaborative environment but many recent discussions (or lack thereof) seem to identify people unwilling to listen. Started off as an awesome place to work and have seen some ugly and petty stuff with some really good employees who have left over the past 18 months. Very cliquey of late. New internal communication where...

    Advice to Management

Get back to our roots. Renewed focus on trust, especially internally. Be a good friend and keep an open mind. Start with the MD as he runs the show and drives the behavior - great guy but is quick to sour on people.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than a year

      Pros

SEI is the most collaborative environment in which I've ever worked. The team is top- notch, coming from both consulting and industry backgrounds, across industries and specializations. I've never seen such support and mutual respect, and credit the flat org model, lack of competition, and rigorous hiring process as key factors to consistently attract top talent. The employee-ownership model is unique and motivating...

      Cons

If you aren't interested in business development and recruiting activities, you may find the model to be a con. While superior client delivery is the top priority - success is also tied to other activities outside of client hours, and this may not be for everyone. If you are looking to climb the ladder, the flat org structure will not provide that opportunity.

      Advice to Management

Continue to be open to new ideas and new perspectives as the organization grows. And keep protecting the culture!

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Having been around for several years (and this not being my first job), I can say that this is a great place to work. However, like anywhere else, it's not the perfect place for every candidate. The employee owner model simply requires more of people than a lot of consulting roles or industry jobs tend to. Doing client work and going home isn't an option (or, at least, isn't encouraged, especially if you want to progress)....

      Cons

      - I think it's possible that people sign up with our model in theory, but when it comes to the day-to-day, it can be too much for some people to manage. Prioritization and multi-tasking are often an essential skillset to get done what we get done. Not everyone is up for that. - This is not the place for you if you want to do client work and go home. - This is not the place for you if you need constant praise (there...

I worked at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

There are some great people that work at Systems Evolution and the employee owned flat model is an attraction.

      Cons

There is a huge difference in a company that encourages a fun environment and one that pushes alcohol and partying as part of your job responsibilities. They take you on an orientation trip that you are prepped for well in advance almost like an audition and you must perform. You also get to have one of the leaders dance on your lap on a party bus. Advice to Management

It is so sad to see the direction of this company that Dan worked so hard to build. It used to be about the work, collaboration and the community. Now it is about money- money- money. Members of the Services and leadership team in Cincinnati are raking in the dough and have lost their way. Get back to the basics of the core values of why this company was created. Stop opening new offices and support the teams you...

I worked at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

      Pros

Staff augmentation type work but with much pay.

      Cons

Little or no leadership, told we will try things and if they don't work we will quickly correct which has not been the case. Largest turn over in years, 4 decline quarters in a row in regards to revenue. With all the departures and the founder leaving large payments are outstanding to them which breaks the model.

      Advice to Management

Get a new CEO the one you have is discounted from the needs of the local offices. He also can't be trusted, makes little effort to know people and has zero connections at most client sights.

      Pros

      - As the company grows, you'll inevitably grow (monetarily and professionally) - Open communication. Leaders genuinely seek relationships with their employees. - Shared decision-making - There are tons of ways to get involved at SEI and set yourself apart. Figure out where your strengths best align with opportunities, and what makes you unique, and get involved accordingly. - If you come out the gate...

      Cons

      - If you aren't ready to act like a business owner, don't work here. SEI seeks top-notch employees, and if you aren't willing to hold yourself accountable every day, you won't do well here.

      Advice to Management

Continue to lead by example, continue to grow cautiously, and continue to reward your employees. Phenomenal company, authentic leadership, unbelievable foundation, and extremely promising future.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

When there are bumps in the road the office pulls together and finds a path to smoother travel. The local consultants truest are the best of the best. They work hard for their clients and for each other. There is a genuine sense of family which is hard to find in most professional environments.

      Cons

You need to be willing to do the "extra" SEI stuff in addition to working hard at the client. It isn't for everyone. Recruiting and Business Development are keys to the office success, and everyone has a role to play.

      Advice to Management

Keep in keeping on. The model isn't going to work for everyone forever, recognizing that and working around it will make the team happier if everyone accepts that sometimes it is ok!

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than a year

      Pros

The key components of the organization fit together and compliment one another better than any organization I've come across... 1. The ownership model and flat organization breeds collaboration and healthy accountability, while avoiding the cutthroat nature of the big firms. The CEO and leadership team simply refuse to treat their folks as subordinates, but rather as peers and fellow shareholders, which breeds an incredible...

      Cons

This is not a place to simply deliver (e.g. bill) and go home. You're not just "an employee" at SEI. As a shareholder, some folks will need to shift their mindset and embrace their ownership in order to be successful here.

      Advice to Management

Stick to your laurels, and don't flinch. The model is truly one of a kind. Let's hope the secret doesn't get out!

      Pros

In an employee-owned organization that thrives on collaboration and participation, SEI stands out with an amazing team of individuals who genuinely care about the organization they represent each day at our clients. Before discovering SEI, I thought all consulting was a travel-intensive line of work…not the case at SEI where it is a local consulting model. I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time

      Pros

SEI's business model is straightforward: hire great people, treat them like professionals, and get barriers out of the way. SEI hires self-motivated top-performers and puts in place incentives clearly linked to organization and client goals. The company truly believes in fostering a community, providing a multitude of social and professional venues for consultants to share experiences. I have also seen some tough personnel...
