I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great team and fun culture - I love the people I work with. SEI does well in recruiting consultants who are talented, experienced, and fun to socialize with. Collaboration - SEI is the best I've seen when it comes to collaboration. Individual consultants aren't expected to have all the answers. We have a nationwide team of 250+ consultants, a tool to help us tap into that knowledge base, and a culture that supports...

    Cons

The recruiting process is long and drawn out. It requires a lot of patience from all parties involved. Health benefits are OK. They’re standard for a mid-sized company but I came from a much larger consulting firm and enjoyed better health benefits there. If you don't want to do client delivery full-time, this is not the place for you. All levels of consultants, from Staff to Principal, are focused on delivery...

Our culture, people, and relationships with our clients are the most important aspects of our business. Continue to maintain that perspective as we grow.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Systems Evolution's model of local offices with a strong culture creates the ultimate family atmosphere. As a flat organization - where hierarchies truly do not exist - team members are encouraged to lean in on one another, in both their personal and professional lives. The atmosphere of collaboration created by the employee-ownership model provides an excellent example of how a consulting company should operate.

    Cons

In a small office, local model team members are asked to wear multiple hats. This includes business development, recruiting and delivery. While I find this exciting, it can be overwhelming for some.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Simply the smartest, most friendly, articulate, passionate, and humble group of people I've ever worked with. Every place I've ever worked, there were always a select few that fit this bill but they were few and far between. I've found that at SEI, everyone is like that. Everyone has your back, egos are left at the door, everyone feels the sense of ownership. I like being around these people.

    Cons

I honestly can't think of any... it's not for everyone though. I like staff meetings. I like hanging out with my colleagues. I like recruiting and business development. Not everyone can say that.

    Advice to Management

    Steady course.

I worked at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I struggled with putting such a low rating on SEI due to the great consultants that work for the company, the friendships I was able to establish, and the fun that I had with them while I worked there. SEI’s culture is truly a social one (but with that also comes consequences that are outlined in Con’s). They are truly some of the best consultants/professionals that I have come across. However, everything else about...

    Cons

Let me start off by saying that while at SEI, I was continually client billable and making money for our office. I was only on the bench once (unbillable) for a very short period of time. I never had a complaint about my work from clients and on more than one occasion was offered a full time role with a client if I left SEI. I say this as to not be viewed as a disgruntle past employee. These are genuine cons that...

    Advice to Management

This isn’t to management itself. This is to all the consultants (particularly ones that have stock ownership). Demand to the Board of Director that a cleaning out of management occur. If you don’t, at a minimum, be smart and jump ship while you can with your dignity. This truly was a great company when I started but the growing egos of the Managing Director’s on up as well as their “circle of friends” are destroying...

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Potential for great culture, strong focus on work life balance, so many great people.

    Cons

The Cincinnati office has changed over the past couple years since I joined. We advertise an open collaborative environment but many recent discussions (or lack thereof) seem to identify people unwilling to listen. Started off as an awesome place to work and have seen some ugly and petty stuff with some really good employees who have left over the past 18 months. Very cliquey of late. New internal communication where...

    Advice to Management

Get back to our roots. Renewed focus on trust, especially internally. Be a good friend and keep an open mind. Start with the MD as he runs the show and drives the behavior - great guy but is quick to sour on people.

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than a year

      Pros

SEI is the most collaborative environment in which I've ever worked. The team is top- notch, coming from both consulting and industry backgrounds, across industries and specializations. I've never seen such support and mutual respect, and credit the flat org model, lack of competition, and rigorous hiring process as key factors to consistently attract top talent. The employee-ownership model is unique and motivating...

      Cons

If you aren't interested in business development and recruiting activities, you may find the model to be a con. While superior client delivery is the top priority - success is also tied to other activities outside of client hours, and this may not be for everyone. If you are looking to climb the ladder, the flat org structure will not provide that opportunity.

      Advice to Management

Continue to be open to new ideas and new perspectives as the organization grows. And keep protecting the culture!

I have been working at Systems Evolution full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

When there are bumps in the road the office pulls together and finds a path to smoother travel. The local consultants truest are the best of the best. They work hard for their clients and for each other. There is a genuine sense of family which is hard to find in most professional environments.

      Cons

You need to be willing to do the "extra" SEI stuff in addition to working hard at the client. It isn't for everyone. Recruiting and Business Development are keys to the office success, and everyone has a role to play.

      Advice to Management

Keep in keeping on. The model isn't going to work for everyone forever, recognizing that and working around it will make the team happier if everyone accepts that sometimes it is ok!

      I worked at Systems Evolution

      Pros

      • SEI has solid consultants who try to deliver the best for the client. • The company is charitable and involved in lots of community events • They have an interesting profit distribution model that can work for some. • Good pay for the commodity based staff augmentation work they do. • For consulting it's a pretty good work/life balance

      Cons

Extracurricular events are killer. Staff meetings every other week. Client strategy meetings. Advocate events. Social events. While only the staff meetings are required you'll get dinged for not attending the other stuff. This is especially tough if you have family obligations or are at a client outside the city. As a consultant you are expected to not only bill full time at the client but to recruit, interview,...

      Advice to Management

It's disrespectful to be asked "what have you done for the office this week?" every week. The answer is billing and making our clients successful. The better question is what has leadership done to ensure consultants are happy or what have you sold today?

      Pros

Variety of projects, minimal to zero travel - its up to you which is nice, plenty of social activities . If you like consulting work but hate the travel this is great option, but note office culture varies I've been to a few locations and some have a great group , others; not so much. The culture varies, depending on what office you are in it can be very clicky, almost like high school. The mid-west and northeast offices have a great group, but head down to Atlanta and you'll get a different feel and not the warm and fuzzy one either, some are down right rude and judgmental. Pros

The previous posts all highlight the great things about SEI (how awesome of a place it is, ownership, etc.), but those views are very skewed by the consultants who have drank the cool-aid. This post is not that. It is about the true inter workings of SEI - some great and some not so great. Pros: - Great work/life balance. This is probably one of the main reasons why people stay at this firm. You work a 9-5 gig with...

      Cons

Ok, so no one at the firm will like the below and the topics will probably get deflected during the interview process. But this is how the firm really operates. Cons: - We do some consulting work, but a good percentage of our work is staff augmentation. SEI will have you believe otherwise, but it is true. Instead of pitching for more strategic-orientated engagements, we go for staff aug type positions just so we...

      Advice to Management

In order to keep growing, the firm needs to change. The structure, incentives, and processes should evolve around the marketplace and the type of people you are bringing on board. The consultants are smart, enable them to do more challenging stuff and really grow this firm. But it probably won't happen since the management team is set in its ways and they already made their money. All in all, it's not a bad place...
