More Pros and Cons

  1. "Great environment and people but limited upward mobility"

    Pros

Nice people, adequate training, student-focused environment, limited pressure from overhead, standard work week, not expected to work over time or weekends.

    Cons

No chance for promotion nor standard milestones for salary increase in academic advising (i.e. Masters, positive annual reviews, graduation rates.)

    Advice to Management

Define a promotion ladder for academic advising based on attainable milestones and positive annual reviews to keep valuable employees motivated to stay. This will also keep salary competitive so they don't leave to go to Del Mar.

    Pros

Good place to start a career if you're looking for a stepping stone.

    Cons

11 years of bad leadership has it positioned for merger with another regional campus to keep it from folding. Decision to merge in discussion with 2017 Texas Legislature. Not a place to plan your next job. Cuts will come with the merger.

    Advice to Management

    Merge and keep it afloat.

    Pros

The university is top notch with regard to personnel. Professors are knowledgeable and focused.
Course load is appropriate and comprehensive.

    Cons

university is shifting away from vocational/technical to more research/academic. This may be appropriate for some fields but it is detrimental to the CS track.

    Advice to Management

Quit worrying what harm might be done with skills and focus on the experience to be gained. Stop trying to make the students worthless in the field.
