I worked at TAWA Supermarket full-time

    Pros

Despite the mid-size chain the company is, the department I worked in was very small, there were lots of opportunities and responsibilities that would not be given to someone as inexperienced as I was. I learned a lot and many of my coworkers are wonderful people to work with.

    Cons

There is this large gap between the pioneers that helped build this company and the administration. Many of the older generation did not like changes. They also pay under market average and have less benefits than similar sized companies. (also partly due to the older generation unwilling to have the youth earn more than they did when they started)

    Advice to Management

It has been a few years since I've worked with Tawa and from the outside, the company seems to have improved. Company culture is very important and I understand it is a hard battle, but I hope Tawa can change for the better as time progress.

I worked at TAWA Supermarket full-time

    Pros

    excellent coworkers
able to get the office supplies you need

    Cons

they do not care about their employees
set on they way things used to be
do not listen to feedback on how to improve the work environment of employees
discrimination- the Corporate office does not reflect the diversity of the workforce. If you are not Chinese you will not get to a top management position despite the fact that half of the employees speak Spanish

    Advice to Management

Be more open to suggestions and TRY to understand your turnover
Your core values do not reflect what is put into practice, fix it

I worked at TAWA Supermarket full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Can't think of any except the COO is good to work with. He just needs to be more courageous in leading his company.

    Cons

Ever since our VP of HR left 3 or 4 months ago, everything is falling apart. It's as though she was the glue, the guide, the TRUE leader in the company. The owners have no clue what they are doing. Discrimination is EVERYWHERE especially if you are not Asian. The CFO, Alice and her morons of leaders are violating every employment law there is. I'm going the the EEOC, Labor Department, OSHA, and every other agency I can thing of.

    Good managers. Understanding
The environment is good to learn things
    Nice supervisors.
Have overpay, have benefits such as paid time off, sickleave..

    Cons

    Pay is low.
    Work hours are crazy.
    No off of national holidays.
    Some employees are too dramatic.
Need to do more than others 99.
The 99 ranch health insurance is bad.

    Advice to Management

I worked at 99 last year 2016. The managers are nice. We work out but I feel like I am not belonging to them. So I quitted to concentrate on my education.

I have been working at TAWA Supermarket part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

5% discount only after getting your paycheck
A good stepping stone for job
Some nice and decent co-worker if you are lucky.

    Cons

I am going to skip the self-explanatory ones that plague every toxic workplace because this company/branch is one of them.
(drama, poor communication, favoritism, unorganized, overworked, dictatorship, hostile environment, gossip behind employees' back, micromanaging, brown-nosers, conservative attitude, etc)

I am going to write some specific ones regarding a few things.
If don't understand their language (this company is heavy in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese as well as their customers), not only they will insult you, they will talk loudly in front of customers about you with another employee. Since the customers can understand it but you can't...
Wait! You CAN understand their language. Good. that means they can nag and berate, just insult in your face instead.
You are out of luck whatever your Asian or not. My first day of working here was a employee asking if I understood Cantonese or not and I said no... she smiled before leaving.

Don't bother addressing issues or offer criticism, they get ignored.

Teamwork is non-existence, just circle-jerking with one another.

    So want to work here?
Then be that person who says "yes to everything. No exception."

    Advice to Management

Nope, my advice fall on deaf ears to those who working at management and this company HQ.

I have been working at TAWA Supermarket full-time

    Pros

I've just been here for 3 months. I am working in the accounting department. Everyone is extra nice to me when the first day I came here. I loved the friendly working environment in the company. My supervisor Johnny is a really know-it-all kind of guy who is always super busy but still very patiently answers my sometimes stupid questions. As a result, I picked up things real fast and started to contribute to the team. It is actually a win-win situation. Just open up your mind and be friends with your coworkers. You will be welcomed!

    Cons

Management and administration are kind of strict. Holidays are not considered as plenty. Since Tawa is a full-year non-stop supermarket so what can we complain?

    Advice to Management

I know Tawa is in a transitioning period. It is a company with great potential in the future. But prease we need more vacations! lol!
