I worked at TD Ameritrade full-time

    Pros

Great culture, good comp, good training

    Cons

Comp not adjusted for region, very heavy retail focus, not much room for growth (sales -> sales manager).

    Advice to Management

Training needs to focus either more heavily on financial planning/wealth strategies or trading and investment items. Otherwise, salesmen don't really fit into any of the current trends.

I have been working at TD Ameritrade as an intern

    Pros

Great culture, community, and associates. It is just a fun and relaxed environment and all the associates are extremely friendly. Everyone no matter what their position is, is willing to help you with anything you come to them with.

    Cons

Majority of entry level positions are on the phone. Personally, I do not enjoy the phones, and talking on the phone for 8 hours a day is not exciting for me. It's tough because I love the company just not the phone part.

    Advice to Management

    Management is great!

I have been working at TD Ameritrade full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, 3 weeks vacation to start, new gear to use and software developers are key to company success so your work matters. Allowed to work from home when needed and we now are doing Agile throughout company.

    Cons

Large company can get lost in the numbers, many offices and divisions. At times there are too many meetings that take away from development time, especially around quarter ends.

    Advice to Management

Don't lose your focus on technology this will be the difference over the years to come if the company is still the leader of the industry. Remember to pay software developers more or they will accept jobs with your competition.

I worked at TD Ameritrade as an intern

    Pros

Great Perks, big organization, clear and established product lines, great compensation, good offices. Intern program had a lot of structured activities, but not enough to interfere with your main project.

    Cons

Long term the company is subject to layoffs and the presentation for interns by HR was clearly designed to hide that fact by only showing headcount from years 2009+ (2008 was MAJOR layoff). If you are young and naive you might not get it. Also it is very hard to gauge work-life balance because you see people working late hours but they swear it's only this time of the year, but since you are there only a short amount of time you can't tell if it is true or not.

    Advice to Management

Keep creating very good projects for the interns to work on. Make sure they are not discouraged by lack of progress due to other people not giving them information in timely manner.
