Great place to work
Oct 20, 2021 - Account Executive in Spokane, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
TEGNA is very forward thinking. They treat their employees very well and are very inclusive.
Cons
Many systems and processes could be improved but it is still a great place to work and embrace change.

Passionate company, doesn't pay well
Aug 28, 2021 - Digital Content Producer in Hartford, CTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
TEGNA cares about its digital portfolio and making sure the stations have the room to be creative while also providing countless tools to make sure stations maintain an overall consistent and professional appearance.
Cons
They are reluctant to make sure people are paid what they are supposed to be paid. At this point in time, with research, I'm making 5-7$ less than I should be making an hour and any attempt to try and get it keeps getting pushed back. We also don't get paid extra for working holidays, only an extra day off. I would personally want more money for working a holiday.

Ride the enthusiasm but know when to get out
Jun 13, 2021 - National Reporter in Charlotte, NCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Tons of passionate and talented journalists Great markets across the company TEGNA does love to promote internally They are putting a lot of effort into new and more modern projects
Cons
Still a legacy industry. Management have their hands tied and wind up micromanaging to meet demands of the higher levels. Corporate is incredibly involved and have almost too much say in how the local stations are run. Corporate can change their desires/focus on a whim and based off one persons perception of a public change. They also tend to put a lot of emphasis on consultants. This means that people living in a market often wind up being told what their market needs rather than ever being asked or included in the discussion.

Pros
Good benefits, awesome PTO, stations are evolving to keep up with the changing media landscape
Cons
Tegna really values MMJing, which isn't always a good thing. Burn out can happen pretty quickly.

Tegna was the parent company of the news station I Ieft. Their company values seem to be for show only.
May 17, 2021 - Producer in Hartford, CTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Work/personal life balance. Health and dental insurance was good.
Cons
This is in regards to Fox 61 in Hartford CT. Not Tegna as a whole. There is only upward growth if you are willing to move to another state. So people with families will pretty much be stuck depending what station they are at. Pay is horrific. You can prove yourself time and time again and work till your nothing more than bones and they’ll just shove more on your plate. No workflow or organization what so ever. Management does not care about their employees except to cover their own butts.

The racist and sexist rumpors are true
Apr 16, 2021 - News Producer in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The people (some) , do care about telling a good news story
Cons
racist and sexist - so many lawsuits against Tegna / WUSA

experience without diversity
Jan 17, 2021 - Multimedia Journalist in College Station, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Heavy work load allows for tons of experience early on University allows great experience for those looking to cover college sports (great way to make tons of contacts )
Cons
I think as a whole TEGNA is a great company but my station in particular lacked diversity and accountability for making it a great station. - lack of diversity - all employees are not treated equal - overworked underpayed - management was not great at the time - very much valued their male & white stand over their minority staff

Pros
TEGNA is a company that is dedicated to their employees and puts people first. The benefits, salaries, etc are all competitive. Corporate leadership is plugged into the pulse of the stations and isn't solely fixated on ratings and revenue. Of all the TV companies I've been with (4) TEGNA is by far the best for employees.
Cons
It's TV news. You're doing less with more and being guided by social media. The general public hates you thanks to the political climate and the pandemic. If you're doing ground level work in a newsroom, it's a lot to handle. TEGNA will support you but it takes a toll mentally.

Good place to work
May 1, 2020 - Master Control Operator in Tysons Corner, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Room for growth within the company. Most of my co-workers are a pleasure to work with. They seem to take employee feedback to heart and try to find ways to improve benefits (e.g. making all time off PTO, added health care options, increased HSA contributions to employees and decreased premiums).
Cons
During coronavirus TEGNA is forcing employees to take a week furlough or reduced pay for three months to help reduce expenses and save jobs with advertising revenue down and these being uncertain times. I get it. Everyone needs to do their part, is what they say, and I have no quarrels doing my part for the team. However, a few weeks later they approved paying millions in dividends to shareholders. Can't help feel like my sacrifice is being paid to shareholders now instead of the well being and betterment of the company. We all had to sacrifice, why don't they? Questionable decisions continuing to use some vendors that have failed us. Some operations decisions were not well planned out, causing headaches all around. Hiring some people in management positions without a thorough vetting.
