I worked at TELUS (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible work styles. Decent pay. Average benefits. Great employee share plan and matching RRSP contributions. Great people to work with and management is usually quite open and transparent.

    Cons

Large company that is slow to react and make decisions. Constant reorganizations and change for what seems like the sake of change. Very profit driven and engagement surveys are not exactly above board.

    Pros

Give great benefits (medical, prescription, and paramedical coverage).

Room for advancement in higher levels of the company.

    Cons

Work hard to keep their money in their pockets.

Micromanage alot especially in the call centre environment

    Advice to Management

    Micromanage less
    Listen and consider staff recommendations
Better pay and not send jobs overseas to countries like Phillipines, India, and Guatemala.

I worked at TELUS part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Excellent benefits & wages
    - Ability to trade shifts to get the schedule you want
    - Unionized
    - Lots of potlucks and free lunches
    - Bonus potential if you're a high performer
    - Great operations managers and directors
    - Ability to work from home if you're a high performer
    - You can move up the ladder swiftly if you prove yourself

    Cons

    - Managers of frontline staff are mixed, my first manager was one of the best I've ever had and my second one was terrible before I left
    - The systems they use in the call centre need major IT support and cleaning up
    - Could add more flex days for employees that work overtime
    - Customers could get really irrate on the phone and can cause strain on your mental health
    - IT is in the Phillipines

    Advice to Management

Engage your employees more and find out what they really think about their jobs, fire bad team managers that basically insult their high performers.

    Opportunity for Growth

    Cons

    Non-competitive Salaries
    Traditional, inefficient workflow and process
    Project managers lack depth

    Advice to Management

Traditional business model is outdated - need to adapt to a DevOps model as soon as possible and continue working on improving the process and leaving the traditional telecom model. Your network is an asset, and the network is a process. Treat is as such and utilize the decades of process engineering and design experience that has become available in the downturn.

I worked at TELUS (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Really good pay scale as a Call Center rep, they are part of a Union that bargains for everyone.
    - Sales Incentive Payout program allows for large additional income based on metrics
    - Great in-class training that is paid and really helps prepare you for the job.
    - Great benefits and stock matching options.
    - Diverse, friendly work environment and positive atmosphere.
    - Lots of incentives and bonus events based on performance and metrics.
    - Opportunity to move laterally to other roles within the company for more experience and advancement.
    - Freedom as management to schedule your week with tasks and meetings.
    - TELUS culture and values are ingrained in employees and really promoted.

    Cons

    - Getting promoted from Rep to Manager massively increases workload and wage increase not as substantial when you compare Salary to hourly unionized rate and include Sales Incentive programs and monthly draws based on performance.
    - Can be hard to find work/life balance that is regularly promoted at TELUS due to shift rotation system.
    - Operations Managers have immense workloads and as a result do not give good support to new Managers and can even be in another Province.
    - TELUS really promotes embracing change and making it happen but Upper Management can be extremely slow to actually make necessary changes that are pain-points for reps.

    Advice to Management

Make your Re-hire process easier and help new Managers get on their feet more.
