I worked at TIAA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Company, Good Benefits, Good Comp,

    Cons

Too many chiefs, not enough Indians. Everyone wants to be a boss these days. Too bad there's no one to boss around. Having a manager on your side is in everyone's best interest.

    Advice to Management

Hire people with the intention of keeping them on board for more than 2 years.

I have been working at TIAA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Focus on the customer. Great benefits and pension. Performance driven culture.

    Cons

New management making quick decisions without considering the consequences. Not ok to make mistakes.

    Advice to Management

When making sweeping changes, make sure you understand all of the consequences.

I worked at TIAA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Company has generally good products for clients in the retirement plan. Great retirement plan, ok benefits. Work from home allowed for many staff.

    Cons

Has had more layoffs of late. Can be slow moving to respond to change. Way too many meetings

    Advice to Management

Try to simplify things - too many groups across the company working on similar projects.

I worked at TIAA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Mission is righteous
    Company is expanding
    Benefits are crazy good

    Cons

Executive team isn't on same page -- constant palace intrigue
No prioritization of efforts of projects, everything is a #1 priority
    No process maturity, wildly inefficient

    Advice to Management

    Set some actual priorities
Stop all projects not in the top basket of priorities
    Make firm decisions
Hold people accountable for actually delivering
The more senior the executive, the less likely they are to live the espoused corporate values.

I worked at TIAA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good salary, benefits, lots of volunteer opportunities. Recruiting process is fantastic and TIAA seems like it should be a great place to work - until you get inside the door!!

    Cons

Lack of training and no one really tries to help new employees. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. Departments have way too many levels of hierarchy and no sense of community or teamwork.

    Advice to Management

Senior leaders are terrible (EMT level). Some of them need to go (and everyone knows it but does nothing about it). HR is a joke. They spend more time covering up for those bad leaders than working with employees.

I worked at TIAA (More than a year)

    Pros

They're somewhat competitive when it comes to salary. They have a cafeteria in the building which can be nice if your booked all day in meetings.

    Cons

I wouldn't recommend working here the chances of being laid off is 80%. Take a more stable offer; this place is a revolving door no one is safe.

    Advice to Management

My advice would be to hire people with the intention of long term employment. Stop hiring and laying off people over and over for the last 10 years this is a vicious cycle! Great candidates are passing up other offers to work here to only be laid off in a few years.

Very political and poor leadership. Leadership too concerned about political standing within the company.

    Advice to Management

Focus on working together and being accountable versus building better foundations for silos.

    Pros

Very committed to discharging its mission to participants , which is to maximize their retirement income.

    Cons

Too slow to react to new developments in the market place. Overly consensus oriented which further slows implementation.

    Advice to Management

Speed up implementation by increasing accountability and responsibility for key decisions. Do away with decision making by committee.
