I worked at TJ Maxx part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Compared to other retail outlets I have worked, the atmosphere at TJMaxx was friendly and enjoyable. The store was small enough that the co-workers all knew each other and would chat to make the time pass faster (depending the department we were assigned to). I also found the customers at TJMaxx relatively friendly and easy, given they are typically looking for a bargain over exceptional service or store cleanliness. Dress code is like school, most anything goes including jeans, as long as it is not ripped/low-cut or inappropriate. I would recommend as a good first job, summer job, or especially for students, since they are looking for availability on weekend and night shifts.

    Cons

Management was brusque and condescending to everybody, and regardless of performance, nobody was given more than about 20 hours a week, unless in a supervisor position. Management did also seem to play favorites in terms of who they promoted and how quickly (e.g. there was one employee who was promoted to supervisor and then manager within weeks of working there, while other employees who had been there for years were not even given an opportunity to interview or apply). Also the pay is extremely low, even supervisors only make barely above minimum wage.

I worked at TJ Maxx (Less than a year)

    Pros

At my location, there was a very friendly work environment. It was super easy to make friends. My boss, managers, and coordinators were all generally very friendly, and they made an effort to connect with the employees. They acted as your friend, but there was still an appropriate level of employee/authority balance. The dress code was informal and relaxed (blue jeans and leggings are okay as long as there are no holes or rips, shirts cannot have insignias/logos, and most other rules aligned with typical school dress codes). They were fairly flexible with hours. Very little drama, if any.

    Cons

While the dress code was very relaxed, there seemed to be a double standard with certain "favored" people getting away with wearing inappropriate clothing, which was something I was regularly hearing complaints about from coworkers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees to better understand what changes can be made to contribute to a more positive environment and happier workers.
