I worked at TJ Maxx full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Access to great clothes & accessories
    -Lots of customer/employee interaction
    -Learn great people skills
-Opportunity to complete different tasks throughout the day
-Learn how to properly delegate tasks
-Those in management roles get to learn many different sales management software platforms (can be frustrating, but also genuinely useful)

    Cons

-Tons of opportunities for lower-level management (merchandise coordinator, key carrier) but very difficult to break into assistant manager or manager roles
-Key Carriers are held to all the responsibilities of an assistant manager, but none of the pay benefits
-Management is often responsible for multiple projects each day, with tons of pressure to complete them all
-SO much pressure to get credit cards
-Lower-level management roles are discouraged from making friends at work

    Advice to Management

Retail is a rough scene, no matter how you cut it, and I'm not sure that there's really a way that TJ Maxx can beat the typical downfalls of retail, like: cycle of pressure to sell, pressure to be perfect, obsession with sales numbers, feeling inadequate for sales numbers beyond your control, etc.

The odd thing about TJ Maxx is that there are MANY layers to management, and the lower-level management roles are tricky because you are given a lot of responsibility and held to a high standard, yet the pay is rarely enough to justify the added responsibilities.

I also had a very difficult time being barred from making friends at work--to the point where, as a key carrier, I could not advertise my friendship with the store manager in any way, despite the fact that we often had the same roles/responsibilities.

I understand discouraging friendships with part-time employees, but when a company gives key carriers and managers similar roles and responsibilities, treating them like peers, this aversion to friendship doesn't really make sense. This could be my own individual experience and not a company-wide thing, but it is something that was very frustrating about the job.
