I worked at TJX Companies as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Causal work environment. You were going against traffic on the Mass Pike. However it also was during the summer, so I can't honestly speak to how the commute would be in the Winter. It was also pretty friendly and off on it's own in a business park, so it was pretty secure.. There didn't really seem to be a dividing line between contractor and permanent, the way there can be at some companies.

    Cons

Very strong male to female mix. I was the only woman on my team of about 20 people. Direction seemed to change every week, if not more so. It was almost as if they had carried over the policies and way of doing things on the sales floor, where frequent movement of merchandize is supposed to "Fool" people into thinking some item of clothing is new, to their back offices. Since it was out in Westborough, this commute can be come very troublesome in the wintertime.

    Advice to Management

Be more organized. This is why your WIFI got hacked and hackers were able to get into your servers where all of your customer's credit cards were stored. . The company direction seemed to change very frequently- when that happens someone can thing of something important, like locking down the WIFI, and because everything is so disorganized, it falls through the cracks. .

    Pros

    The company is wonderfully successful.

    Cons

A lot of legacy systems and applications make working in IT a challenge. Not flexible on hours or work environments... very much a 9-5, must be in the office, etc.

I have been working at TJX Companies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are good if you are an associate however health insurance offered by the company is not the best.

    Cons

The company is in the midst of a massive outsourcing of the IT departments. Any new employee that walks through the door in the IT office is not an American, English spoken by them is hard to understand due to their accent. These contractors all hang out in cliques, speak in their own language around those who don't understand it and it makes for a hostile working environment because of these barriers. Senior management could care less I suspect since its saving them money from actually hiring Americans.

There is a sense of low morale everywhere in the IT office
Department managers are not experienced enough to know what their associates are dealing with on a day to day basis

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to what is going on in the IT sector of the company, there will be more talented people leaving in the near future.

I have been working at TJX Companies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many good people to work with,
But, this is the place to be,
...If you want to have no feelings of accomplishment
...If you are single and like to pick up the slack of people with kids
...If you like to work less than 40 hours as a salaried professional
...If you enjoy hiding behind process to do nothing and get paid for it
...If pointing fingers at others when things go wrong is your thing

    Cons

Not a merit-based organization; little reward for true productivity
IT Management infused with too many individuals more interested in their personal gain than solving problems and creating high-performing teams
Huge and growing chasm between management and true contributors
Very negative environment, IT management is blissfully ignorant of the discontent (or simply does not care)

    Advice to Management

It is only a matter of time before the business quantifies how little IT service they now get to the costs they incur. Instead of one-size-fits-all process, use more intelligence in focusing on problems. End the matrix experiment, get back to cohesive teams that produce high-quality at less cost. Understand the true cost of all this outsourcing.... lower hourly rate and fixed managed service contracts do not equal reduced cost and better quality,

    Cons

Below average pay and promotion opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Senior Management needs to bring in new people, new ideas, and stop clinging to an old school way of managing.
