Good pay Good benefits Easy work Stand by every week
Cons
I’ve worked at this company for a more than a year and have had a terrible experience with the management team. I also have not grown into a different position despite all my hard work and dedication. ZERO growth here. The two day managers are both very unprofessional and have poor management skills. One of them is a narcissistic and always afraid of other people taking his job. He plays mind games with the employees, which created a very uncomfortable work environment. The other manager has favorites and is always flirting with one specific girl all the time, which makes everyone else feel left out. The work culture was terrible, with some people being expected to work hard while others watch. The lack of communication is a significant issue, as they expect us to complete tasks without giving any clear instructions. The HR department is also a disaster, with zero HR skills at this office. Any complaints or issues are never addressed, which makes it very difficult for employees to address any concerns. Overall, I would not recommend working at this company. The management team is extremely unprofessional and creates a toxic work environment. There is no clear direction or communication, and the HR department was non-existent. I have not had a good experience working here and would advise anyone to look for employment elsewhere. The Blacksburg office is a whole different story. If you are going to work at Torc, then I suggest you apply for that office. They have great leadership and share their values a lot better.

Let’s be real -

• Company culture. “Humble, Hungry & People-Smart” is the mantra. I’ve worked in a couple of Engineering organizations and most Engineers were not very humble and had gigantic egos. I find my colleagues at Torc are incredibly humble and approachable. Everyone’s hungry and passionate to accomplish what we are working on. • Benefits - Compensation: Salaries are pretty competitive and there’s annual bonuses and stock options. - 4 weeks of PTO starting out and it’s front loaded (no accrual) + Winter shutdown (closed between Christmas & New Years.) - 401K: 100% match up to 6% (best immediately from day one.) - Healthcare: Great coverage (Anthem) company pays 100% of employee monthly premium. - Flexibility: A lot of remote options, otherwise hybrid (2-3 days a week) if you’re not touching hardware everyday. You’re not chained to a desk and can operate with a lot of autonomy (no pun intended.) If you have family obligations or appointments they are accommodating. • The product itself is cool and “sexy.” We’re working on Autonomous semi-trucks and our parent company is the market share leader for 18-wheeler tractor trailer trucks in North America and one of the most reputable and well respected brands in trucking for the last 130 years.
Cons
Torc has grown dramatically in the last 3-4 years, doubling in size and going from one location to five (including global expansion.) We’ve gone from a start up with little structure and established process to a more centralized, hierarchical environment with standards and operating processes. A lot of moving parts and quick transitions, there is undoubtedly some growing pains, but necessary change to scale and work toward commercializing a product. I think there were some shocked and disgruntled lifers when Michael Fleming announced he would be stepping down and Peter Schmidt took over. Michael was a great leader and got Torc to where it is today with this being his first and only post out of college. The changeover to Peter Schmidt was a logical one as he has a demonstrated track record of delivering products at scale. All in all, I really have no complaints - best place I’ve worked by far.

Really didn't want to write this review but....

Having been a part of Torc for 3+ years and seeing the full transition from <100 employees, to being now much larger after majority acquisition - I feel like I have been able to garner a good sense of Torc's Past, Present, and Future. Benefits are 'good' (relative to other industries, I'd say average to below average for AV sector) . Pay/Compensation is ditto to above. Engineering has an exciting and complex problem to solve, which enhances the 'buy-in' for employees. Generally could find most peers easy to collaborate with.
Cons
Here's the part where I wish wasn't true but unfortunately is: Culture is a shell of what it was (you could blame covid, expanding remote workforce/acquisitions , C-suite changes, etc.) but it has become watered down and next to nada. Torc is plagued by out-of-touch management and HR, many of these roles could be 1/4 of another person's responsibility and still be executed at the same level. The concept of 'hungry, humble, and people smart' is noble but is rarely the case as these values are not what actually pushes someone internal to the company forward (HR rather just hire 30 more engineers than fixing core problems with people management) There is much to be said about the value of 'institutional knowledge' and loyalty which, unfortunately, amounts to very little upward mobility potential. These may be isolated, but ineffective and out-of-touch decision-making by management. Requirements, design choices, road-maps, are handled by a select few (which is not always wrong), but when these game-plans finally do trickle down there is often a disconnect in proposed technical direction from management to product owner/deliverer, which could have mitigated. This overall planning/design inefficiency (which often leads to wasted time/capacity/resources) does not bode well for both company prospects and employees long-term. Torc along with every other company in this sector is R&D based with a speculative focus for prospects on the horizon (take that for what you will regarding job security), as such, come crunch time there can be a lot of finger-pointing and outcropping of egos which suffocates productivity and aforementioned work-culture.

Great retention rate Humble can-do attitude of employees. They don't have the "grass is always greener on the other side" syndrome that a lot of employees at bigger tech companies have. Enjoyable to work with them. Recently increased salary to be more competitive Stock options Bonuses
Cons
Growing pains associated with rapid growth

Great team, singular mission

We have a smart and capable team. It's a very engineering-focused company, with lots of opportunity to build and innovate. The entire company is working on the same mission, which make priority conflicts between groups negligible.
Cons
It's a small company going through a transition to a big company and some of those growing pains can be felt.

Unparalleled Company Culture - A True Gem Amidst Some Unfounded Negativity
Apr 5, 2023 - Team Member in Albuquerque, NMRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I have been working at Torc Robotics for more than two years now, and I believe it is essential to share my experiences to shed some light on the recent negativity posted on Glassdoor. It seems highly likely that a disgruntled former employee is trying to discredit the company out of spite, which is truly unfortunate, as my experience at Torc has been nothing short of exceptional. First and foremost, the company culture at Torc Robotics is unparalleled. The team is highly collaborative, supportive, and driven by a shared passion for innovation and advancement in autonomous technology. Management is approachable and open to employee feedback, often implementing suggestions to improve the workplace and address concerns. The work environment is highly conducive to professional growth, with numerous opportunities for learning and development. As a part of the Torc team, I have personally experienced a great deal of growth in my skills and abilities, and I have been consistently challenged to expand my horizons. The company offers competitive compensation and benefits packages, which demonstrates their commitment to valuing and investing in employees. Furthermore, Torc values work-life balance and encourages employees to find a sustainable balance between their professional and personal lives. It is important to note that Torc Robotics, like any other company, is not perfect. However, the company is proactive in addressing concerns, and it has an open-door policy where employees are free to share their thoughts and opinions. In conclusion, I strongly believe that the recent negative reviews do not accurately represent the Torc Robotics I know and have experienced. It is unfortunate that one individual's bitterness is attempting to tarnish the company's reputation. If you are a prospective employee considering joining the Torc Robotics team, I wholeheartedly recommend taking the opportunity to work with this amazing group of professionals and be a part of a thriving and innovative company.
Cons
Due to the fast-paced and rapidly evolving nature of the autonomous vehicle industry, the workload can sometimes be demanding and require extra effort to keep up with the latest developments. However, this also presents a great opportunity for professional growth and learning, as employees are consistently challenged to stay at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. The company is aware of this challenge and actively encourages work-life balance, striving to ensure that employees are not overwhelmed.

Pros
I have been here for 2 years and have been able to experience a lot of Torc's growth. Even with the significant amount of growth, our leaders have been able to maintain effective communication about our company goals and objectives.
Cons
I think Torc should give more opportunities for current employees to go into management and leadership.

Pros
Good pay, good benefits, culture was decent, owned and operated by Americans unlike competitors. Good diversity, not a woke workplace.
Cons
Some of the upper management on the operations side have limited experience and some from places like nasa are shockingly lacking in critical thinking skills and common sense. A lot of bad managers and some managers scared to step out of their office. The hr is useless for any issues/concerns. Lots of checks and balances which slows development to a crawl.
