I have been working at TOTAL full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Friendly environment, very diverse, expatriation possible

    Cons

Yearly increase and performance bonus are not based on your performance: You can try hard and have a great yearly performance or you can lay back and relax , at the end you would get the same thing , the difference is not really worth the effort!

    Advice to Management

    Reward hard-workers who deliver results!!!!

I have been working at TOTAL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great compensation, in line with local industry.
It's a huge business, and feels very professional from the top down.
    Safety is taken seriously.
    Great coworkers of all types.
    Union.

    Cons

Work/home balance leans heavily to the work side. It is expected, and anyone who knows this line of work knows that most of your time will be spent at work. Excessive overtime can hurt morale, but most accept that the pay makes time at your second home bearable.

    Advice to Management

Our process has become our life, whether we like it or not. That comfy chair is one of the few perks we get.

I have been working at TOTAL full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Total is an awesome place to work: fun colleagues, exciting work/projects, great benefits and work/life balance.
    - Despite the old industry, Total is extremely innovative in their approach to solving problems. Innovation is encourage throughout the company very rarely do I here 'that's now how we used to do it'. New ideas and ways are always welcomed.
    - Colleagues are from all over the world - some of the smartest I've ever worked with, extremely knowledgeable in their respective fields which gives me a lot to learn from. As an engineer its very easy for me to reach out to a subject matter experts in different parts of the world to seek help/guidance on a particular issue.
-Total is continuously growing and has some very exciting work going on around the world. If you're open to expat opportunities Total can provide for a very dynamic career path.

    Cons

-Despite being among the majors, very few people know of Total in the US. Not enough work is being done on brand recognition.
    -Tight on spending
-For as international as Total is, sometimes it does feel overwhelmingly French - especially on a managerial level. Yet the gradual shift from being a French company to a more globally inclusive company is evident and noticeable. I've noticed a more international mix throughout the managerial ranks than before.

    Advice to Management

Have more events and activities for employees to showcase how big and diverse Total really is. For some of us working in the US this aspect of Total can be easy to forget.

I have been working at TOTAL full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Total in the US is a good place to work. The company is investing a tremendous amount in the US right now, which means they are committed to the country and the people who work for them. The management is fair and the people are friendly, especially at the sites in the area. There is a world of opportunity here for employees.

    Cons

This is a French company and the culture is hierarchical. But once you know that and accept it, you can work efficiently and effectively.

    Advice to Management

Continue to allow your employees to push for better ways to work

I have been working at TOTAL full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Total thinks long-term and is frugal (sometimes too) with its spending decisions.
    - Total treats employees well.
    - Total has a good share program to invest in and matching (up to a limit) 401k.
    - Total invests into the future on worldwide projects.

    Cons

    - Total is sometimes a bit "Europe heavy". Employees outside of Europe may not be as involved as they could/should be.
    - Total has much "paperwork" (not uncommon for big companies) to get things done.

    Advice to Management

While outsourcing is necessary, I feel that Total gave away too much control to externals and often internal employees are left out of informational loops.

Also, cost-efficiency is one thing, but we need to ensure deliverables are met with respect to time and quality. The majority of contractors is not that experienced or skillful.
