I worked at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, especially healthcare and savings/retirement (employer matching etc) just have to stay until vested. Potential opportunities in other related agencies.

    Cons

Bureaucratic structure - constant performance testing to retain job- high turnover - top position “political appointment” leadership doesn’t stay long enough to implement and fine tune programs.

    Advice to Management

Really Read the annual satisfaction survey results and develop and implement responsive, well designed programs to boost employee morale at all levels. Get more permanent key leadership in top positions - need new “blood” !!!

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    work indoors, benifits, OT available

    Cons

Scheduling is horrible. People with less senority coming in and getting better schedules than staff that have been there longer. Only get to change your schedule once a year. It should be every six months.

    Advice to Management

Improve the scheduling and annual leave process.

    Pros

Working for the government with opportunity to move around the country. If you don’t mind moving you can promote fast.

    Cons

Poorly educated management. Nearly unqualified individuals are given high paying positions based on years of service instead of quality of their work.

I worked at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, good co-workers, great benefits, job not difficult. Easy to move up rapidly if that's what you want to do.

    Cons

Lack of respect and sometimes verbal abuse from passengers. High turnover, baggage can take a toll on the body after a while.

    Advice to Management

Stop reacting to each incident as the greatest threat. Get better technology and don't underestimate your employees.

I have been working at TSA (Transportation Security Administration) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Standard federal government benefits package plus immediate death benefit up to $35K. Strong focus on mission among workforce. Dedicated employees who continue to improve screening protocols and practices - good job of balancing security and waiting times.

    Cons

Banding system stinks in comparison to the GS system unless you are already a GS14 or GS15 and want to make a salary outside of the GS scale as a non-SES. Constant change among top leadership, constant OIG and GAO audits, additional positions created (i.e., more government). Agency is too top heavy with senior executives making $200K+ with retirement from other agencies, senior executives riding out their high-three need to retire and make room for fresh blood, new and innovative ideas.

    Advice to Management

For those who have positions capable of remote working, trust your employees to do so. Promote fresh and innovative ideas and move away from silos and business as usual (i.e., that's the way we've always done it). Crack down on retaliation for those employees who do come forward and raise concerns about administrative or security-related procedures.

Management such as supervisors and leads are disjointed and unorganized.
