    2 Years + and it's getting sour

Jul 7, 2015 - TSA OFFICER in New York, NY

    Pros

The experience alone is pretty amazing. I've worked at a very busy large airport for 2 years plus. I have seen and witness some crazy things that I am sure not many people can say they have. Some coworkers can become great friends. The thought of protecting the public can make you feel good. The pay is great when the government isn't playing childish games with your paycheck.

    Cons

Every day is a gamble. You can have those days where a psychotic or snobby passenger is yelling at you about the rules. Then you will have days where you bang heads with a moron coworker who is trashy, unprofessional, and possibly insane. You wonder how they hired some of your coworkers. Imagine witnessing 2000 plus people a day squeeze through a small checkpoint with no air conditioning and it is dusty as hell.. oh, and you are the only male or female on the floor giving pat downs all day? On top of it you might run into someone recording you with their phone or taking photos. A passenger sexually harassing you while you pat them down or even looking in their bag? There is no process to report this?

    I'm very neutral

Jan 12, 2015 - Transportation Security Officer in Boston, MA

    Pros

The main reason why I worked here for I felt like I was contributing to the fight against terrorism, the pay was decent and it's a good look working for the federal government. If your just looking for good pay with no college degree this is great for you!

    Cons

It's too bad that the opportunities to get promoted are limited to connections, and a lot of your superiors don't even have college degrees but talk down on you and get paid very high salaries while someone with a master's can be in stuck in an entry level position because they didn't kiss up to the right person or someone higher up doesn't like them for whatever reason.

    This job is EXTREMELY Overrated

Nov 26, 2012 - Transportation Security Officer in Newark, NJ

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

If you have no life and are willing to work constantly then I would say the pay is good. I've met some wonderful people.

    Cons

Management is completely clueless. The SOP (rule book) is CONSTANTLY changing and you are expected to know and keep up with all changes even though you aren't given much, if any, time to train. You are micro-managed and treated as a number. You slave away for 6hrs as a part timer only to receive a 15 min break. Schedule changes every 6 months and the chances of working within 9-5 are slim to none.

    Over worked

Dec 24, 2022 - Screener in John F Kennedy Airport, NY

    Pros

The pay is decent for someone who doesn’t have to pay bills and you get 10% off food that’s about it.

    Cons

Everybody’s attitudes suck, the workers and the passengers. More so the workers. We are overworked and possible health concerns being around radiation, so many people and luggage all day. It messes with your mental health but to each is own. You have to repeat yourself 5401 times a day and it stinks.

    Good part time job

Nov 4, 2020 - Transportation Security Officer in Missoula, MT
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Pay is good for a part time especially in Montana where the minimum wage is still 8 an hour.

    Cons

Took several months after applying to get an interview. It is also difficult to go from part time to full time in small airports because of a lack of full time positions available and also because it's based on senority

    Pros

I chose TSO because I feel TSO can protect the passengers to a certain degree. If we all work well as a team and pay attention to what's going on we will be great

    Cons

I know it may be hard to catch all criminals but if we all pay close attention to what's going on I know we can stop most

    With a Grain of Salt

    Jul 21, 2015 -  in Franklin, PA
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

As a part-time employee at a Category IV airport, I had plenty of time to finish college in between flights and training. Schedules could be easily adjusted for sick days and vacation days. Earning leave doesn't take too long to accrue: part-time TSOs without military experience earn two hours of sick leave and two hours of annual leave per pay period. The government offers many health insurance carriers and we have the option to carry vision and dental insurance at reasonable rates. There are savings plans and retirement plans available.

    Cons

Often the airports are understaffed, and asking for time off can be difficult if there is insufficient staffing. There is little room for upward mobility, particularly if one is at a smaller airport. Part-time positions are widely available, but it is incredibly difficult to obtain full-time status unless one is willing to transfer to a new airport and wait until a full-time position is open. Training is geared towards those with little education, is repetitive, and incredibly tedious with little result.

    Pros

This job pays great for a security position and if you can manage to advance there is a lot of upside potential benefits are great

    Cons

public hates you, management ignores you, treated like a robot, hours are horrible, hard to take time off.
