I have been working at TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is excellent, so are the benefits.
Excellent union provides support and camaraderie
Autonomous work, to a significant degree
Variety of work available due to 24 hr operation: early bird, split , afternoon, late evening and overnight.
There is a culture of safe practices and procedures
Training was paid and provided. There was adequate time to catch on and learn the job. Large investment in new hires, with a very high retention rate

    Cons

Management in general are awful. The less you interact with them the better.

The first few years are challenging as work selection is limited as a newcomer. The longer you've been around, the greater access you have to work that suits your lifestyle.

Exposure to customers who suffer from mental health issues, anger issues and a high risk of being assaulted

Political meddling and influence. Ultimately it's the Mayor and the City Councillors who are the real management team.

TTC is constantly cash strapped and tight on operational funding. Subsidies are low.

    Advice to Management

Put a stop to the "race to the bottom" mentality. It ALWAYS costs more in the long run.

I worked at TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) full-time

    Pros

    Excellent pay and benefits
Once you gain enough seniority, you are able to get the work you like.

    Cons

Hypocrisy and double standard of supervisors and management. They treat operators like second-rate class. What hurts me is a lot of these people were former operators but once they became a supervisor or in the management staff, they tend to develop superiority complex. They forget where they came from and treat us their former colleagues with indifference.
By being a bus operator, I have discovered that there are a lot of ill-mannered, greedy and ungrateful people out there. People who are miserable and just plain mean people and they take it out on us operators which was really unfair. This was my weakness. I was finding it hard to not take it personally and this was affecting my life at home. We get paid the big bucks but the physical, mental, social and emotional miseries are not worth it.
Kiss your social life goodbye. Always tired. No quality time with your family and friends.
I did my best to transfer to other opportunities within the company but they never gave me a single chance. They all failed me. The hurtful part was I was ready and willing but I was shut down many times. And I am not stupid at all. I am well educated with a BA (unlike those supervisors and management staff), the determination and the experience. I guess this was not enough.

In all my years with TTC, this was the saddest work experience I've ever had. I'm not cut out for this toxic work environment. Yes I miss the pay, but is my sanity worth it? Absolutely

    Advice to Management

TTC is supposed to be a team. It's not about the management against operators. But that's what I saw. That's how I felt with all the experiences I've had with you. I did my best to be an exemplary employee but I was overlooked. I was ready to move around the company, take more responsibilities and explore what TTC has to offer but I was unlucky that way. I was never given a chance to prove my worth.
