Pros

None, unless you are a friend or family, nepotism and narcissism run rampant.

Cons

No development, no training, no accountability, poor planning. There is little to no opportunity to advance, nearly 50% turnover. They use "ok" equipment, and are extremely happy with "ok". For the most part management is on time and leaves on time, sticking the employees with the consequences of their poor planning, making you work endless hours overtime while they are home with the family. That is their idea of "work life balance", you work, while I have a life. Management is always scrambling to find someone to do something that was due yesterday. The more you give the more they will take, the harder or better you work the more "other" peoples work you will end up doing, as a bonus - you get to watch them do nothing. When they need something it's "Hello my friend" when you need something it's "No, you understand, it's only business". Raises, bonuses, promotions are all reserved for the friends and family or people whom they owe favors. Before the current regime, raises and bonuses were common, now they are nonexistent. They claim they aren't doing well on this hand, then brag about how well they are doing to other companies, magazines, etc. They even maintain 2 health plans, 1 for corporate which is really good, and 1 crappy one for the entire rest of the company, which they refuse to change despite receiving numerous complaints from multiple offices, claiming there are far better plans locally.

Pros

The office is clean and new with a nice view. The HR group was very nice. It was sad to see Irene M. go.

Cons

Advancement is easy because titles are meaningless. Can someone really be called a Senior Engineer if they only have 5 years of professional experience? Many lead engineers are exceptionally arrogant and simply don't have the experience to be arrogant or to be a leader. The best bridge design engineers have practical hands-on field experience. T.Y.Lin has almost none. Designs are academic and impractical. If you want to design expensive, hard to build bridges, this is the place for you. Meetings quickly become shouting matches between egos. Forget proper engineering - Culture dictates, if you say something faster and louder than the next guy, you must be right. Money, office size, titles, and fame are more important than getting it right or good engineering ethics. Salaries are very low when compared to other firms. I didn't realize it until I looked around.

Pros

Can get good engineering experience with the right team, teams are largely shielded from the chaos in middle to upper management and resulting from M&A. Benefits/comp seem average. Many people are nice and amenable. There are no pros for non-engineering, professional staff other than the paycheck.

Cons

The rapacious M&A appetite from TYLin and whoever owns them. You may get promises of being able to do more work as a result of an acq and that no cuts will happen, but cuts will happen 1-2 months post-acq when they acknowledge the obvious inefficiencies. Insanely bloated middle/upper management, increasing from acqs, but lower staff get the ax. Many people are nice, but plenty of old engineers who should've been done years ago still get to be adjunct and keep the "boys club" vibe going. It'll be annoying but won't rise to the level of harassment that HR will do anything about. If you do a stint here in any discipline, give it 1-3 years and bounce. Don't expect upward mobility, skills training for promotions, tuition reimbursement, or even lateral movements.
