      Best job of my career

Oct 14, 2015 - Senior Software Engineer in New York, NY

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Commitment to IT craftsmanship in a wholistic sense, work-life balance, no politics amongst colleagues, no passengers on project teams, colleagues who are balanced in having great skills and personality (you want to have drinks with them), lots of client-facing opportunities if you are at an onshore office.

      Cons

Benefits aren't as great even though the salary is more than competitive. Currently we have more work than we can recruit good enough people for, and a lot of old-timers are leaving. There is still worry that Tacit will lose its culture of craftsmanship as it merges more closely with Newgistics.

      Pros

Working with smart/fun people on a variety of challenging projects with highly visible clients. Very good work-life balance and very competitive pay. If you like consulting and solving real challenging projects, you'll enjoy working here.

      Cons

Typical challenges when working with big enterprise projects: politics, pace in which things move can be frustrating with big companies.

      Used to be great

      Pros

Great local team Stellar benefits Amazing ideas Great office and location great work/life balance Most of the managers have the employees best interests at heart

      Cons

Integrating with Newgistics has been challenging and half of the time no one knows what they are doing. Lack of value for employees as Newgistics sees them as a number. Total lack of profit sharing. Most of the new executive team is at best so so. Crappy pay

      Pros

Great culture, great work life balance, fun office outings and meals. Very collaborative environment.

      Cons

Not really any, maybe more opportunities for training and cross office visits. It's easier to work with distributed teams if you've been able to see where they are and who they are.

      Great Culture ... In Transition

      Pros

      - real work/life balance - knowledgeable and friendly peers - true culture of kaizen and constant learning - good customers - live their mantra of "applying software as a craft"

      Cons

      - while technical delivery processes are mature, internal processes like HR, finance, accounting need some work - navigating a new path after recent acquisition, trying to figure out whether to focus on consulting or developing a product

      Pros

Working at Tacit Knowledge is great. Our Senior Management is really concerned about doing great, inspiring work, not so much the bottom line, which translates into great projects, new technologies and proper work-life balance. The guys really enjoy what they do and do it great. We interact with the other offices and make true friends over the world. The offices are beautiful, the projects challenging, the paycheck competitive, really what else can we ask for...

      Cons

There are not many downsides to working at Tacit Knowledge. I would maybe point that once you are in another office for a bit you might want to stay there for a while longer but have to return to your home office, but that is only bad cause I really like visiting all offices, and enjoy the local food and culture.

An environment for personal growth while fully committed to deliver on high standard and contribute to company's success

      Pros

      - Great peers and management - highly competent, professional and friendly - No politics - Many high-profile clients - Great tools and environment - Allows for good work-life balance - Decent pay

      Cons

It happens to work for difficult clients, which is OK. But it happens sales people to overpromise, then look for ways to deliver on that promise at the risk to compromise the quality, and implicitly the job satisfaction overall. This isn't a norm and shouldn't be. Hope we learn from that and keep our standards high as we always used to.
