I have been working at Tacoma Community College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I love working here. My boss is really caring and understanding. It is really easy to get your shift covered. It really helps you stay on top of your math.

    Cons

I average about 12-15 hours per week. When there is no school there is no work

    Advice to Management

I love this job and don't change anything.

I worked at Tacoma Community College (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, diverse tasks, decent pay. A good job if you are enrolled in school.

    Cons

Employer limits hours to part time to avoid paying benefits. Management unorganized. Transfers to different teams without notice or asking employees if they are okay with it.

    Advice to Management

Clean the stockrooms and reorganized storage to meet OSHA standards. Consider the existing employees before hiring new people.

    Pros

Benefits available for adjuncts; centrally located office

    Cons

Inflated adjunct to full time ratio, but that's a problem EVERYWHERE

    Advice to Management

Hire more full time instructors; get rid of superfluous administration

I worked at Tacoma Community College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The students are good to work with. Teaching them what I know and seeing the light bulb come on is a great experience. Medical benefits and matching 401K are good, if you can get enough working hours to qualify for the benefits.

    Cons

The state wants to keep a high level of adjunct or non-tenure professors, in order to reduce their expenditures of benefits such as medical and retirement. I believe it is also the will of the college. Communication is also lacking. Being, technically, employed for 5 years and only actually in the classroom for 50% of those 5 years and not being given any answers, I finally severed my employment.

    Advice to Management

For a higher level of education, put more emphasis into your instructors and staff and focus less on how much revenue is coming in. Schools should be more about the education process and developing a quality product that is able to join the workforce and become a productive member and less about your profit and loss statement

I have been working at Tacoma Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

engage with the public, assist students in reaching their academic goals, reasonable hours, supportive staff members, opportunity to grow in your profession.

    Cons

Allowed a maximum of 17 hours of work per week and no more than 69 hours per month. Non-competitive wage.

    Advice to Management

Upper management: support your middle management in their goal to support their staff. Nothing kept me in my low paying job more than my direct manager's sincere desire to support me as a worker and an individual.

I have been working at Tacoma Community College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fun, get to know people from different backgrounds and great opportunity to learn about different cultures. I'm a full time student who work part time, but my supervisors are very flexible about my schedules. I like working here, everyone gets along well and very close to each other.

    Cons

I'm a part-time and I was forced to join the union which I didn't want to. They took out money from my paycheck, a full time student from different school, who works part-time here. The union is ripping off my small paycheck.
