I have been working at Tacoma Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Benefits, Retirement, Job Security and Paid Holidays

    Cons

Unions membership with dues whether you want it or not.

    Advice to Management

Understand what the folks in all departments do each day, the needs of the departments and hire more Secretaries to share the load. Hiring additional MAnagers and Directors does not help the folks who carry out all the necessary tasks day in and day out.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Tacoma Public Schools part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The salary was competitive and the job finding software was very useful. Many of the schools were new and pleasant to work in.

    Cons

Many of the schools have students who are difficult to teach and there are some serious discipline problems in a number of classrooms.

    Advice to Management

It is my opinion that substitute teachers need more resources for classroom management. In a few schools the administrators were in the classroom to help out frequently during the day.

I have been working at Tacoma Public Schools full-time

    Pros

    - Pay is decent for administrative staff but it's quick to max out your pay scale, especially if you are hired with previous experience that corresponds with the pay "steps."
    - Literally impossible to get fired.

    Cons

    - No one gets fired, ever.
    - Union control has institutionalized an environment of laziness.
    - There are no performance reviews, no metrics, and no follow through on employee conduct/performance.
    - Way too many directors (or "Assistant Superintendents") with too many assistant directors.

    Advice to Management

Streamline the amount of directors you have and get a decent employee performance review system (or get one to begin with).

  8. "Substitute Campus Safety Officer"

    Pros

Provide a safe environment for staff members to work and for students to learn. Working with great employees and help make a difference in kids life with encouragement.

    Cons

Coming across troubled and disrespectful kids who act out as a result of behind the scene issues such as a broken home, single parent, drugs and alcohol or living in foster care etc.

    Advice to Management

Work as a team to allow kids to have the motivation to learn and encourage them to ask for help when needed of if they need someone to talk to.

    Pros

Very good parental support. This does not carry over in most of the schools. Good communication among staff and administration.

    Cons

Extremely low pay. There are very limited options for health benefits (only Group Health). Little to no protection against physical and mental abuse from unstable students.

    Cons

Most staff don't care about students! Students are suspended unfair! Staff gets away with mistreating students!

    Advice to Management

Get rid of them!! Find staff that unconditionally care about the students.
