    Pros

They connect me with students from all over. I don't need to advertise or market.

    Cons

Poor user interface and poor customer service. High service fees.

    Pros

This company had a fun culture and interesting field. It is a niche market that has the potential to grown and expand into other vectors.

    Cons

It is a start up that with a fun culture that became very corporate very quickly. A lot is expected of the employees with little pay off in actual salary.

    Advice to Management

Rather than just giving people work and tasks to do you should focus on developing their skill sets.

I have been working at TakeLessons (Less than a year)

    Pros

-The website can help jumpstart a career in private lessons.
-It seems like the website gets a significant amount of views.
-I haven't heard of any competitors.

    Cons

-The company takes 40% of your salary, which is significant especially if you are just starting out and charging less than your peer competitors.
-The website is not super user-friendly

    Advice to Management

-Make the website easier to navigate for teachers. Make the navigation tabs (for the teachers) crystal clear and easy to find information quickly.

I worked at TakeLessons (More than 10 years)

    Pros

No one works for Take Lessons exactly. They send you music students and you give them 20% of each lesson. The benefit is that if you are new to an area and have a decent profile and clear experience, it will show and they will send you people. Within some amount of time you will have a few students, and if you keep up with them, it will increase over time.

    Cons

The downside is 20% of every lesson, forever is not great.

Additionally, the contract states that you can't take your students away to teach privately. This is understandable. However there ought to be a statute of limitation on this, and on the 20%. Ok, they send a client. Great. I feel like, let them take all of the first month. Once a student sticks around, they have almost no role. So to pay them in perpetuity felt after a time very foolish. I left takelessons after a year, and it was a good way to get a feel for the type of students in my area. I started a YELP ad and kept it running. I had some good reviews from yelp in the past so I chose to build my teaching on my own.

The students were often overcharged or unable to contact takelessons. It felt like two guys in a room with a bunch of computers. Not quite a business...

I worked at TakeLessons part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They charged $40 for a half hour. I made half.

    Cons

They weren't great at giving me new students, even though I had great retention with the ones that I had. Calls to the company were futile and resulted in talking points and no real discussion. They kept a lot of secrets from the teachers. We're not trusted members of the company and yet are the backbone of it.

I have been working at TakeLessons full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are lots of great people and fun extracurricular activities. Very casual office environment, beer at company meetings, and because it is a start-up, lots of opportunities to learn new things. If there was a better focus on taking care of current employees this could be a really great place to work.

    Cons

Lots of extra work with no extra incentives. No clear path to salary increases or career advancement. PTO is very slim and benefits could be better.

    Advice to Management

Employees need a clearer idea of what to expect in terms of their own future with the company. How can we grow here? The company is very focused on meeting external goals and pressures and this can leave the internal team feeling neglected and burned out.

    Pros

Steady contract teaching work for extended time.

    Cons

You take a serious pay cut, as opposed to teaching privately on your own. (50% reduction at least.)

    Advice to Management

Get alot of your own students before you start the program.
