      Pros

I feel very lucky to be working for Takeda during COVID - the company really showed that it follows through on its values in the way it has approached decision -making and policies during this time. I have felt very supported by management and also appreciate have vaccine and infection disease experts in the company who also provide information and education. More generally the pros are: Values-based organization that puts patients and employees at the center. Smart and engaged colleagues who are willing to collaborate. Focus on building and maintaining culture, including Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion taskforce that has significant organizational support . Focus on rare disease and areas of high unmet need.

      Cons

Still in a period of transition - between Shire acquisition and moving US HQ to Cambridge/Lexington. Some open roles are taking a long time to fill.

      Downhill fast after Shire

      Pros

It was a relatively good company with good people; mildly innovative for it's size but trying to be better

      Cons

Shortsighted across the board, particularly with US senior management (VP level and above). Shire "acquisition" and "integration" was a huge distraction that caused actual patient-focused work to grind to a halt for way too long. Also, legacy Shire personnel were given substantially better treatment and preference (multiple promotions before, during, and after integration). Shire took care of its employees during negotiations while L-Takeda was just desperately trying to get a deal done, which resulted in most L-Takeda employees getting kicked to the curb within a year. To be fair, there was a lot of dead-weight at L-Takeda, but L-Shire was in even sadder shape (most of the good talent had already left because they were sick of all of the acquisitions). Given the high industry turnover in the Boston area, one can only hope the people that suffered through the "integration" will all be gone in a few years so the employees no longer view "us" versus "them".

      Pros

Takeda overall is a big company who is out to make a difference. Their corporate goals to put patients first are well intended.

      Cons

Unfortunately the manufacturing sites in Lexington & Alewife didn’t get that memo. They never have bought into the Takeda culture after the Shire merger. They are run by a senior team of bullies! The only way to work your way up is to do what they say and never ever question their judgement. Alternative ideas are never welcomed and met with dismissiveness, even if you have experience from a different company. People who are loyal and obedient are promoted over people who are knowledgeable and experienced, even if they don’t know what they are doing.

Great company overall, recently grew tremendously

      Pros

They always try do what is right, by the patient and employees. Positive working environment. Opportunities for development and career advancement with acquisition of Shire.

      Cons

The company is extremely large now with the acquisition, so departments seem siloed. Many sales managers and reps are mediocre at best but allowed to coast with no consequences. Very conservative culture.

      Process Engineering Internship

      Pros

The integration process seemed to be well-run (I worked in the LA Fractionation Plant, a former Shire plant). When applying to the internship, I got to chose several teams I was interested, and I landed in Process Engineering (which was one of the teams I chose). The team was laid back and closely-knit, while remaining professional; I really enjoyed the culture. I felt like I could make mistakes, and get help easily. I was also given work where I could utilize my skillset as an engineer; no grabbing coffee or doing other stereotypical "intern stuff." I worked on engineering designs with a sizeable impact on operations. There was a dedicated mentorship program, and both mentors and supervisor cared about personal growth. In the LA site, lots of engineers were former interns.

      Cons

Pay could be better ($18/hr); most biotech companies pay more. Some interns were assigned to teams they didn't apply to. Lots of interns also didn't have much to do. I was informed pretty late that I was hired to be on the team, so I had to scramble for housing right before finals week.
